Edit button on posts?

This has probably been done to death, and I'm sorry ... but I'm so puzzled at the lack of an edit button on posts. It would eliminate so many extra posts on threads.

Is there a reason there isn't one?

Hi there OP,

Thanks for getting in touch. We can definitely see why some Mumsnetters want this, but equally, when this topic has come up, there's also quite a few Mumsnetters who'd rather not have this option. There's always a chance that posters might attempt to re-write history and completely change meaning if we introduced an edit button, which would leave threads incomprehensible.

If you ever need to edit a post, please do give MNHQ a shout - we're always happy to see if we can help.

Another forum I use has a time-limited edit button - five minutes after posting. It allows for correction of typos but not rewriting posts after the thread has moved on.

Oooh I like @Celebellys idea! I often hit send and then see a typo!

Yes, another forum I'm on has time limits. It works so well.

I'm on one that gives a 3 minute edit window - plenty of time to edit that irritating typo.

I was going to say the same about time limits.
Most newspapers have an option when commenting btl to edit, but only for about 5 minutes. it means ppl can edit posts but can't just go back and rewrite stuff after a disagreement.

I'd love this option.
