How on earth do I name change?

I'm on my phone but not the app (android phone) I go to settings and it brings up my user name history but then for the life of me I can't see an option to add another user name

Don't you just type over your existing username? You need to enter your password somewhere I think.

I tried that but it comes up with a message saying that's not the name in my account...I KNOW,it's a new sodding name

So managed to post under old name but not worked out how to change to a new one. Ffs
