Twitter links open in browser not twitter app

To be fair MNHQ this may not be you, but this is the only site I have found the problem in.

Normally of I click on a link to a twitter post it opens in the Twitter app. For some reason on MN it opens in the browser?

Android / Chrome

Yeah, I'm having this problem too, it's annoying (and only been for the last week)

Also Android/Chrome

Maybe it is MN then Wink I'm glad it's not just me Grin

It's happening from other sites too, so it'll be an android issue I expect

Hi there all,

Is it possible you accidentally set your device to open links in the browser, rather than in the twitter app?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/02/2019 17:11

Nope. Twitter links are set to open in twitter (and generally do)

So I was intrigued and did some digging.

If I go to the Waitrose mobile page and click their twitter link it opens in the app. Relevant source code is:

href="https://twitter.com/waitrose" target="_blank" title="Waitrose on Twitter" onclick="ga('send', 'event', 'Footer', 'click', 'Social - Twitter'

Tesco however tries to open in the browser, their source code is:

ref="https://twitter.com/tesco" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" title="Twitter [new window]" aria-label="Twitter (opens in new window)">Twitter

A Mumsnet twitter link looks like:

target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/ZubyMusic/status/1100348562041462784">twitter.com/ZubyMusic/status/1100348562041462784

I am in no way an expert but it looks like the "rel" tag may be the issue as it is present in the Mumsnet and Tesco code (which doesn't work) and not in the Waitrose code (which does)

In conclusion, I think I probably blame the latest chrome update...
