mumsnet and Gina Ford

Justine (mumsnet) · 31/08/2004 12:15

Mumsnet would like to clarify that Gina Ford has not been banned from our discussion boards. She has asked for various offensive postings to be removed (for obvious legal reasons) and we were happy to oblige given the hurtful nature of several of them.

We on the mumsnet team would be really grateful if, for the sake of the site, folks could let this lie now. As most of you know our financial situation is not particularly robust and we are not really in the position to finance a legal dispute.
Many thanks,
Justine, Carrie, Rachel and Tech

Crumbs! Does that mean that GF is a MNer, or does she just lurk....

Fio2 · 31/08/2004 12:32

Tissy · 31/08/2004 12:35

Tissy · 31/08/2004 12:43

OK, I'd like to let this lie, but I'm just too nosey! Please, if it would upset J,C and R to go over it again, will somebody fill me in via CAT?

aloha · 31/08/2004 12:45

I really, really think MN would prefer this thread to be closed.

AuntyQuated · 31/08/2004 12:46

[whispers]
it would take 2 days of eamil communication to tell you what went on. but don't worry, you're not alone, loads of poeple missed it as it was the weekend of the MN party. I didn't miss it tho'.

MummyToSteven · 31/08/2004 12:51

agree with aloha

Fio2 · 31/08/2004 12:52

oh I am so sorry, i will go off and smack myself

lou33 · 31/08/2004 14:12

Don't want to sound bossy, but it would be great if this thread didn't turn into a debate about what went on, and was left alone.

enid · 31/08/2004 14:47

Wow, it was really her .

Flossam · 31/08/2004 15:05

Thanks for clearing everything up for us, not another word from me about the subject now!

littlemissbossy · 31/08/2004 16:04

oh bugger, i missed it too

tigermoth · 01/09/2004 08:51

Thanks for clarifying this and putting a lid on things.

coddychops · 08/09/2004 14:12

ahem

CountessDracula · 08/09/2004 14:15

From a legal perspective, is mumsnet responsible for the content of the site when it is posted by other people? If so then any site could be closed down in seconds by libellous trolls surely?

coddychops · 08/09/2004 14:21

errr yes
like pop bitch almosty was

jampot · 08/09/2004 14:22

doesn't look like it

clairabelle · 08/09/2004 14:22

has anything come about it in the news?

JanH · 08/09/2004 15:25

Oh Lord, I hadn't seen this before, wouldn't have posted link to Guardian article if I had - sorry.......

lou33 · 08/09/2004 17:24

I think it is a bit of a grey area, and websites sporting disclaimers have been shut down in the past iirc. Or at least threatened with it.

GeorginaA · 08/09/2004 17:48

Seeing as how Demon Internet were successfully sued after someone posted a defamatory statement about someone else on a newsgroup hosted by them, then I would say yes... Mumsnet would be legally liable - disclaimer or no disclaimer. There is legal precedent.

fio2 · 08/09/2004 17:50

I suppose its just a matter of respect rather than a legality
