What are the reasons for thread deletions?

I thought threads were deleted if they were trolls/banned posters, or potentially identifying.
Can you now get them deleted if you don't like the replies?

Yep, I was just thinking that about a thread that has just been deleted (prob same one you are referring to)

What’s the point in AIBU when if YABU you can just have the thread deleted.
It should just be IANBU and if you don’t agree then we’ll just pretend it never happened.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2018 10:46

They can be deleted if it turns into a bunfight against the OP: "we are here to make people's lives easier and it's causing the OP distress"

Or just a plain old bunfight.

LikeIcare · 27/10/2018 10:48

They've been deleting threads because the OP doesn't like the responses for aaaaages now. Usually due to 'OP having privacy concerns'

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 27/10/2018 10:50

Yes, I can see how a bad gunfight against the OP should go, but yes Eminy i agree with you.

I was really angry that thread was deleted. The reason given is really odd. The thread was full of support for op not just criticism. It seemed a really good all-sides discussion. I didn’t see anyone being rude or disrespectful to any great degree !! Seems like mn can now decide when threads are finished ????

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 27/10/2018 10:57

I felt the same way Heron.

I potted one the other day where the MNHQ deletion message appeared to be saying OP didn't like it (she'd asked if she was being a twat about something and a couple of posters said 'yes' and all bar one posters thought she was in the wrong.

Not even a figleaf of privacy concerns (though it wouid have been difficult to make that plausible on the thread I'm thinking off).

It's not so long since the awful debacle of deletions (where posts were just removed, not even a deletion message to show they had been there) to keep a thread nice.

MN's USP was that it's the one with the straight-talking (and the swearing). MNHQ can change that if they want to, it's their site.

But they should tell us when they make policy changes that affect users ;usually they hide behind 'we don't really have a policy on...' which means it's not in the new staff member desk bible. But it bloody well is in the collective elephantine memory of MNetters, as most of it has been thrashed out collaboratively over the years.

ilovesooty · 27/10/2018 11:01

It seems increasingly apparent that even if there is a range of responses on the thread the OP can now get it deleted if they don't like some of the replies. It's really annoying when it happens even if the OP has had some support - they can now seemingly throw their toys out of the pram and ask for deletion because some people disagreed with them.

LikeIcare · 27/10/2018 11:03

MNHQ have been asked about it a few times and just say that they 'want to make peoples lives easier' so if the OP is upset and want it gone, they usually will.

HeronLanyon · 27/10/2018 11:05

Aibu should be renamed ‘soiled’ ‘support or I leave, even delete’. I was one who supported op on that one about 70%. Spent time balancing my thoughts and reply. What a complete waste of everyone’s time.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 27/10/2018 11:08

Which is funny because when someone outed a personal medical situation my ds was going through on a thread I started, I asked for the thread to be removed to protect his privacy and they said no...

HeronLanyon · 27/10/2018 11:09

‘We can see op has been told very firmly she was being unreasonable’ nonsense ! Felt to me more were understanding her or it was pretty evenly balanced. I just think this reason wasn’t even accurate let alone appropriate grounds in which to delete. Oh well got stuff to do rather than waste more time here !!!

Hi, Ihopeyourcakeisshit

Sorry for not hopping on here before now Blush.

Could we ask you to drop us a line at [email protected] with more info about the thread you are referring to here? We'll then try to dig it out so we can get back to you with what happened.
