Anti-abortion ads on mobile site

Hi MNHQ

I've just had an ad for StandUpGirl appear on one of the threads I'm reading which is a revolting evangelical pro-life site. Angry Angry Angry Angry

Please could you review your advertisers or make sure whoever supplies them does so that this type of crap doesn't appear on your site?

I will send a screenshot if you tell me where to send it.

I've never seen this but that's shocking!

OrchidInTheSun · 12/09/2018 14:07

It is shocking. It targets teenage girls which is even more repellent.

I haven't seen it either but I would not be happy to encounter it. I know with such a well-trafficked site there may be anti-abortion activist users, but if ads are running of this kind then I would expect such ads to be balanced with adverts advocating support for women seeking abortions - the BPAS for example.

Can I ask if we can have the fairy adverts back. Sick and tired of accidentally clicking on gambling sites and App Store links

IdahoJones · 12/09/2018 14:12

That's grim. Women need safe choices, not guilt-trips from evangelical whack-jobs.

Dottierichardson · 12/09/2018 14:41

Agree particularly as women come on to the site to ask for advice about abortions or for support after abortions. The last thing they need is to see an ad of the kind the OP saw.

OrchidInTheSun · 12/09/2018 14:45

Luckily my fertile days are behind me so I wasn't personally traumatised. But had I seen that at another point - say just after my abortion - I might well have been.

I'm reporting my OP as posting in Site Stuff doesn't appear to have attracted any attention.

Hi there everyone,

We're really sorry to hear about this, and agree it's not on. We're flagging it to our ads team now.

In the meantime, if anyone sees it, if you could please click on the link and copy and paste the URL it takes you to onto this thread, that'd be very helpful.

TimMumsnet · 12/09/2018 15:00

Hey guys, thanks for raising this. We've found some of the ads you mentioned in the iOS Talk app and blocked them.

OrchidInTheSun · 12/09/2018 15:01

Thanks Anya. This is the ad.

And no, I didn't click on the link. I don't want them to think their ads are driving traffic to their website

Thanks Tim. Is there anything you can do to stop this happening again?

OP posts:
TimMumsnet · 12/09/2018 15:36

We've blocked standupgirl.com - so they won't be able to list adverts with us again.

IdahoJones · 12/09/2018 16:03

Thank you

OrchidInTheSun · 12/09/2018 16:51

Is there not a kind of generic block you can put on types of ads? Like not accepting gun ads or whatever.

We block certain words and phrases but sometimes, these advertisements are disguised as something else entirely... which means our systems won't pick it up and we have to manually block it. It's really frustrating (we understand) but we will continue to block as soon as we're aware. Flowers

OrchidInTheSun · 12/09/2018 20:41

Ah yes it makes sense that they are trying to go under the radar (I really would make the world's worst spy).

Thanks Lily. I shall keep a beady eye out :)
