They can presumably check full posting history including alternative NNs, at least.

It probably means nothing much, they have just removed the thread and feel they ought to be giving a reason.

Apart from being able to see other NNs, they could probably check if there was a new registration shortly after they'd banned someone, and then compare posting styles. Maybe they even have a textual analysis tool though in some cases it's transparently clear that someone is a PBP from the style and content.
