Ads that automatically play

I'm finding MN unusable when ads that play automatically are on the screen as its taking up so much memory on my device to play them and no I can't block them, I've tried.

I also have light sensitive epilepsy and sight problems and can no longer increase the size of my screen as it just increases the ad, not all move, but it's honesty making it expensive for me to use the site as its taking ages to post because memory is taken up playing ads in the background instead of typing and the inability to increase screen size is impossible because it just increases the ads.

I know you need ads but don't understand you having ones that flicker and move needless using up my limited mobile allowance.

I've no option to get ad blocker (device too old) and no option to use wifi.

I'm on iPad using safari.

I no longer use mn on my phone because i'm now on an old phone due to cracking the screen on my other one and I can't use adblock. And the ads make the site unusable for me and eat my mobile data - so I am using the site a lot less, as I don't access it via mobile, so no access when I'm out and about, I only use it at home on laptop or ipad (which is wifi only).

Hi OP,

Really sorry about this - happy to look into things our end and raise this with our adops team. Do you know what the advert is for? Could we have a screenshot?

Becca19962014 · 15/07/2018 16:48

It's all ads that automatically play, not just an odd one. I get them almost all the time here now. I'm not sure you want a screen shot of all of them - though I can try of course!

Adchoice now requires me to download their app and my equipment isn't uptodate enough to run their app.

Mostly I'm leaving and coming back later (or not)

Thankfully I have lots of strong adblockers on my laptop and have never seen a single advert on mumsnet or any other site, use them!

Becca19962014 · 15/07/2018 16:57

Unfortunately my iPad isn't able to run them, it's too old.

Do you use chrome instead of the app? It should work on chrome to install adblockers

I've found that the moving ads make it difficult to post at times, too, and the site is slow to load. One I've noticed is the Boots ad, but it's not the only one. Mostly using Kindle Fire, Silk browser.

I’ve currently got reproduce your fine art.

And virgin trains.

And a v annoying moving dyson.

blackbirdbluebottle · 15/07/2018 17:46

Just get adblockers! Or if it's a game on your phone that you don’t need internet for then put phone on airplane mode to stop the ads!

StargazyDrifter · 15/07/2018 17:52

I'm in a similar position to OP and have found that MN has far more moving ads than other places I visit regularly online. Or perhaps I notice them more here because of their positioning. Either way, disability-wise this makes MN a bit of an uphill struggle.

duckfuckduck · 15/07/2018 17:53

I can't use an adblocker my phone is too old.

blackbirdbluebottle · 15/07/2018 17:54

Can you not install chrome extensions on the app?

duckfuckduck · 15/07/2018 18:19

not on my old phone the versin of chrome it can run is too old for adblock when I try to download it I get a not compatible message

Becca19962014 · 16/07/2018 09:38

So far this morning I've had:

Boots
SuperDrug
Lighterlife

All moving and everytime they do my screen defaults to where the ad is.
