Is 'cis' banned or not?

Hello MNHQ,

Can you please clarify whether or not the adjective 'cis' is banned? I think that it was banned under your new rules; however, many posters are still using it?

I appreciate that context is the issue here, and it is not always a slur. However, I do feel that the adjective 'natal' is more appropriate.

Thank you.

Hi SPOFS,

We have a page that we put together which we think clarifies our position - you can find it here.

We said "Many feminists are affronted by the term ‘cis’ and ‘terf’, so using these terms will make civil debate less likely. As we’ve said, context is everything – but it’s likely that going forward our moderation team will delete these expressions.

As you can appreciate, this is a challenging issue to moderate, and very often decisions are subjective. As such there are bound to be a few inconsistencies."

As you said - context is everything, but we don't allow sweeping negative generalisations of any group. If there are particular posts that concern you - then please do report them to us and we can take a look. Flowers
