When does a TAAT become a TAAT or a thread in its own right?

michellefromtheresistance · 07/07/2018 20:13

Someone starts a thread about England not being supported by Ireland or Scotland fans in the World Cup. Gets deleted for not being 'in the spirit of MN'.

On that thread, there was a lack of knowledge about the geography and political history of the UK and Ireland. So I started a thread about that lack of knowledge. Not about that thread and the World Cup but more about the lack of knowledge. It was an interesting discussion and an important one - given Brexit and devolution.

I know it's your site. But does your TAAT definition stifle discussion from things that stem from other threads?

Oh I missed that and your thread, but yes there is a shocking lack of knowledge on here.

And that's before you even talk about the casual racism that's allowed.

RunMummyRun68 · 07/07/2018 20:18

Yes, you started a thread about everyone's lack of knowledge and then everyone piled on and corrected you and educated you!!

It was funny!!Grin

At least you know now Wink

michellefromtheresistance · 07/07/2018 20:22

At least you know now

Without repeating the thread, that's not what happened - as I am very much aware of the state of the countries on the British Isles / islands in the Western Atlantic.

So I didn't learn anything I didn't already know Hmm

I was just curious as to when a thread becomes a TAAT

I’d also like to know this, OP.

And you had plenty of people on the thread agreeing with you.

DrMantisToboggan · 07/07/2018 20:43

MNHQ can you respond please l, and confirm that we are in fact allowed to discuss Ireland’s status as an independent and sovereign country today and any other day on MN?

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 07/07/2018 20:46

Would also like HQs clarification on this please. Are we no longer allowed to discuss Ireland in relation to the U.K. or Great Britain?

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 07/07/2018 20:47

I’ve reported this thread in an attempt to get a response from HQ.

LivLemler · 07/07/2018 20:49

OP I've no idea why people were rushing to correct you when everything you wrote was correct.

DrMantisToboggan · 07/07/2018 20:49

I also reported it, and pointed out that such a stance from MNHQ - deleting threads about Ireland as an independent country - is pretty outrageously discriminatory.

JenMumsnet · 07/07/2018 21:11

Good evening,
We'll try our best to clarify what a TAAT is.
A TAAT is a thread which appears to be referencing other threads either explicitly or obliquely.
We are more than happy for you to start a thread to discuss any issue/subject As long as it does not discuss another thread.

StealthPolarBear · 07/07/2018 21:14

Why though?obviously some threads are looking to continue an argument in a different guise but what's inherently wrong with a taat? I started the most innocuous one recently, couldn't believe it was deleted.
Do the reminiscing threads (does anyone remember penis beaker? ") also get deleted?

StealthPolarBear · 07/07/2018 21:14

This thread needs to go clearly

duckfuckduck · 07/07/2018 21:14

Thank you Jen = so there wouldn't be an issue with starting a thread to discuss the casual racism towards the Irish here? Or the ignorance of basic knowledge around geography and politics?

StealthPolarBear · 07/07/2018 21:15

I think mine was literally "can anyone link me to

StealthPolarBear · 07/07/2018 21:15

Well there would be now as you've stated your intention on another thread :o

duckfuckduck · 07/07/2018 21:16

That's what I'm getting at Stealth.

I can't now, no one can, because of the TAAT thing.

Which means it can't be discussed.

DrMantisToboggan · 07/07/2018 21:16

Thread 1 was about Scottish and Irish people not supporting England in the World Cup and how odd it was since they were all part of the U.K. [sic]. Lots of posters responded that it was because Ireland was a separate country.

Thread 2 was pointing out Ireland’s status as an independent country.

This is classed as a TAAT? Really? So anything that comes up even obliquely in the course of one thread is forbidden for discussion in another?

StealthPolarBear · 07/07/2018 21:18

Till we go off and foeget all about it duck
Ironically one of the most bumped threads at the moment is "funniest mn threads of all time" or something similar

duckfuckduck · 07/07/2018 21:19

I know I saw tht Stealth.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 07/07/2018 21:26

Thread 2 was pointing out Ireland’s status as an independent country.

Did this one discuss the first one?

michellefromtheresistance · 07/07/2018 21:27

We are more than happy for you to start a thread to discuss any issue/subject As long as it does not discuss another thread

I took great care not to mention anything about another thread. Until people were wondering why I asked the question. So I had to mention another thread.

'Mentioning' a thread doesn't really mean discussing it. Does it?

OP posts:
michellefromtheresistance · 07/07/2018 21:28

Did this one discuss the first one

It mentioned it after a few posts - because people were wondering why I asked the question.

It didn't discuss the actual thread.

OP posts:
DrMantisToboggan · 07/07/2018 21:28

MNHQ have emailed me to say they are more than happy for a thread to be started about Ireland’s status as an independent country.

But that’s what the deleted thread was about. Confused

michellefromtheresistance · 07/07/2018 21:30

But that’s what the deleted thread was about

You could start that thread. But if people ask you why you started it, DON'T MENTION THE OTHER THREADS. I did mention it but I don't think I got away with it Grin

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 07/07/2018 21:32
