Asterisks

Could anyone tell me why, when I bold a name asterisks appear? I'm not very techy.

Are you on the app? Asterisks are how we bold on the mobile and main sites.

Yes mainly on apps.

Just when I bold a name little asterisks pop up.

On the desktop / mobile sites we do bolding by putting asterisks on either side of the word, so bold but without the spaces. If you do italics does ^ pop up?

Oh. When I bold I just tap on the icon (?)

Just tried that with italics, no it doesn't.

Must be sth to do with being on the app then as I mainly use phone or the IPad.

When you press the button, it simply inserts the asterisks for you, which you need to use to make something bold on MN.

But I don't see the asterisks until after I post? Always posting on the app.

Not sure why the app is doing that but the asterisks are visible if you have a space between them and a word. So if you select only the word or phrase and no leading/trailing space before tapping bold it ought to be ok.

You'd really expect the software " to remove* the space but it doesn't seem to.
