Why can't we AS this any more?

Up until last week I could work out how many posts had been deleted, both for myself and for posters who might have been, erm, slightly questionable.

Now AS won't let me search by poster name + "message deleted by" any more.

Is there a reason for this? Because it seems to me (cynical as I am) that it's a very useful way to hide how many posts are deleted by certain MRAs goady posters in FWR

The bloke posting was a previously banned poster and also sendingprivate messages asking for sex Thats fucking creepy so yes damn right im comparing it.

Maryzsnewaccount · 26/06/2018 19:05

Or at least it would be enlightening if you could still do it ....

There is no point in looking at posting history these days. Each of the user names has a history of about 48 hours. Then after an hour or so they return, cunningly disguised Grin

massively There is a section on Reddit where they AS Mners and post about them on there. I dont post on there either but i found whole threads about me on there a while back.

If its not ok for MNers to AS suspicious posters on here then surely its not ok for Redditers to do it to everyday MNers.

No one has said you cant n/c have they?

HelenaDove · 26/06/2018 19:42

I think ive used the function about 3 times in my seven years on here And its always turned out to be a goady fucker/PBP

I dont search loads of MNers or anything like that

I did search the username that pmed me asking me for sex. Which showed that particular username didnt have any threads Which shows that the only reason they were using that username was to send dodgy sexual pms.

Men sexually harass a woman online and its women who have to justify themselves as usual and write reams to do so.

Twas ever thus!

LastTrainEast · 26/06/2018 19:59

I'd like to check mine too, but yeah it may not have been intentional.

It's possible that in the database the deleted post now just contains a code that means deleted and that code is replaced with the text 'deleted by' only when it is displayed. That kind of thing is done so that you can easily change the message for them all later or even display it in the users own language.

Perhaps the whole post is still there so they can check what it said later but with a code added that tells the site software not to show it, but to print the message instead.

LastTrainEast · 26/06/2018 20:11

On the other hand I didn't take in how recent the change was so ignore that. It wasn't an accident.

"Yes, but why now?"

Possibly incidental to the other changes which have rolled out this week? I don't really like it (always hate change) but it's now harder to find topics other than chat and AIBU. I know I post quite often against the creation of more topics (as so many languish unused) but making only those two easy to find seems a bit far in the other direction

Maryzsnewaccount · 26/06/2018 20:19

No-one is objecting to namechanging Confused

What we are seeing at the moment isn't namechanging. It's faux-innocent "new" posters arriving, insulting everyone, making snide remarks, getting banned, re-registering with a new name, rinse and repeat. And repeat and repeat.

This is a specific group of trolls we are talking about, not posters (new or old) going about their every day lives.

My guess would be a bug in search. We were told that notifications for deletions were being implemented (are these working yet?). The two may be related.

You can still search for deletions with Google.

To check your own deletions:
^"Username" + "message deleted by" " " site:www.mumsnet.com/Talk/^

You can opt for just the most recent posts (24 hrs, week, month) if that is all you need.

To check for deleted threads in FWR these are worth a try but not always successful :

^"Threadtitle" " " site:www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/^

I can see deleted threads in "Threads I'm on" if I've posted to them.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2018 20:49

I'm not sure they can do much about those posters who re-reg,Maryz. Someone bent on being a pain who's willing to make new email addresses and reset their router - there's no automatic way for the system to detect they're the same person, is there?

There is something they could do - they could listen to regular posters who have had an ongoing bunfight with Poster A for 2 days; poster A disappears and 5 minutes later a disingenuous Poster B appears and uses the same language and arguments and spelling mistakes and flounces around in the exact same way

It's so fucking obvious so much of the time. But no, they are all innocent newbies, and we have to be nice to them all.

Yes, I sympathise with that GardenGeek. It can of course be mis-used; genuine posters can be AS'ed and torn to pieces sometimes.

It's not a great system. But when it comes to trolls it can be comforting to know that a certain poster is a dick across the whole board, rather than thinking it's personal on one thread, if you see what I mean.

Oh the bewilderness I'm not at all. I've posted in good faith on fwr as well.

Good to know. Thanks. I am a bit cautions since so many of my friends were endangered by the security breach.
FYI, I never let a story of any sort get in the way of the truth.

Hey, let's not fight here (there's enough of it everywhere else) Smile

I know AS can be mis-used and abused, and I do feel a sense of shame using it to "check up" on people, but with the recent rules I actually started this thread when I was checking myself (to see whether I'd crossed the new, confusing, guidelines). It was only when it didn't work for my posts that I started ASing a few other, erm, interesting posters and wondered why the policy had changed.

It probably is a bug or a glitch or a code rather than a deliberate thing. I'm just being suspicious.
