Has policy on thread deletion changed?

Imchlibob · 22/05/2018 06:16

A couple of times recently I have posted on a thread which has subsequently disappeared completely. There always used to be a "deletion message" placeholder in "threads I'm on" giving a short explanation (eg PBP, troll, privacy concerns etc) but these last two times there has been nothing.

What's changed? I think deletion messages are important. Pretending the thread never existed is disingenuous.

Hi OP,

Thanks for bringing this up.
There isn't a new policy for thread deletions, there should be some explanation in the message.
We sometimes use something along the lines of 'This thread has breached Talk Guidelines' But that is usually only used for Spam threads when we are removing a lot at once.

OK so by way of experiment earlier this evening I found a thread that was clearly destined for deletion, posted on it and reported it. It is absolutely definitely not in my Threads I'm On list. Not that I am interested in that particular one but I'm not making this up.

Just now, I opened a thread, was reading it and my iPad froze completely for a while... the MN app apparently closed itself and when I reopened I can't find the thread again. I'm not 100% sure which board it was on so perhaps I'm just looking in the wrong place but it seemed odd...

Imchlibob · 24/05/2018 23:23

Now that's what I'd call "normal" - if you were just reading a thread and it got deleted then you wouldn't be able to find any evidence of it. But if you have posted on a thread it used to hang around the "threads i'm on" list with all posts deleted except for an explanatory note from mnhq which was sometimes witty). It's that bit that seems to have stopped.

You're right... and being on a thread right at the point it vanished might throw a spanner in the works I suppose (but it really ought to bail more gracefully)

Hi Imchlibob,

Could you let us know what browser and which device you're on? Could you also let us know whether you're on the mobile, main site, or app?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/05/2018 13:45

I've noticed this happen a few times too, unfortunately I can't reference the threads (as they were removed from Im on!)

Chrome, android, mobile site

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 26/05/2018 13:49

I have noticed for quite some time now that threads that are deleted appear on threads I’m on but much further down the page. You have to scroll quite far down the page to find it.

SophieLMumsnet · 26/05/2018 14:03

Thanks for that, ItsAllGoingToBeFine - much appreciated.

Zibbidoo, if you could also let us know device/browser etc, that would be fab!

BeyondRedYNWA · 26/05/2018 14:08

They're showing as blank now, where the "this thread was deleted for being a goody fucker" used to show in TIO...

(ipad, safari, whatever the up-to-date version is)

I’m on iPhone 6 using safari on the mobile site.

Imchlibob · 26/05/2018 14:58

I'm using Chrome browser on the mobile site.

But I think ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo has found what was happening - I found the thread I experimented with on 24th May, much earlier than I would have expected in the chronological list on Threads-I'm-On - I wonder if the deletion process is reseting the 'time last posted' field to midnight?

Imchlibob - so it sounds like the threads and their deletion messages are still visible just far further down the list than in the past - have we got that right?

Justmuddlingalong · 27/05/2018 20:37

They sometimes show up on threads I'm watching, rather than threads I'm on.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 27/05/2018 20:40

That’s what’s happening for me flissMN

Imchlibob · 28/05/2018 00:06

I've only got one current example but yes you understand correctly.

I can't screenshot on this phone as the button I would need to use is broken, but all the active threads in the threads-i'm-on list show a few recent posts each with the first few words and a time-and-date field. When I eventually found the deleted thread I had to load the second page of threads-i'm-on (I never even knew there was a 2nd page) to where the threads that hadn't been posted on since the day before the deletion.

So at least I now know where to look.
