Am I being an idiot? I can't see people's profiles....

I'm sure I must be missing something fairly fundamental. And I's usually computer savvy but I just can't work it out!

How on earth so I look at someone's public profile on Mumsnet? There are some threats that say there are pictures on their profile.

I assumed you click on the person's username in the thread? It looks like a hyperlink, but all that happens is I get a little blue box with the username in again.

What am I doing wrong!?

I think MN switched all profiles to private following the recent data leak, so you won't be able to see them unless individuals have made them public again.

PanPanPanPing · 21/05/2018 10:47

Photos were removed from profiles last year ('ish?) and, as Screaming said, I think profiles were switched off quite recently.

BertieBotts · 21/05/2018 10:52

They all got deleted during Jeffrey, which was a couple of years ago now. Nobody has used them for years since we've been able to upload photos to the forum itself, and because recently there have been more concerns over identifying information (time was people would have a couple of pics of themselves, their age and their DC's pictures on their profiles) so I imagine nobody ever bothered to refill theirs in.

PanPanPanPing · 21/05/2018 10:57

I thought some MNers reinstated their profiles post-Jeffgate? I'm sure I've seen a few in more recent times?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 21/05/2018 11:00

A few yewars back MNHQ realised, after the fact, that the 'profiles' section allowed people to input their own code into the website and it was used to steal the login cookies from anyone who visited them.

BertieBotts · 21/05/2018 11:08

It would make sense that they disabled them again after the recent data leak.

This is from the MNHQ thread about GDPR:

"Long-standing Mumsnet users may remember the Profile Page functionality that we rolled out to users many years ago. For now we have decided to default all existing public Profile Pages to ‘private’, so that MN users who have put personal information on their profiles have a chance to review and delete it if they want to. You can check whether you have a Profile Page, and edit or delete it over here.

If you’re looking for the My Photos page: we’ve suspended this for now - it wasn’t working well and needs a complete revamp. Any photos you had previously uploaded have been deleted from our systems."

Hi folks,

There are no longer pictures on user profiles but the profiles are still there.

You should be able to view a profile by clicking on the user's name. If that name isn’t clickable then it means that the user is keeping their profile private.

Rubberduckies · 23/05/2018 06:42

Ah I see, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!!
