Just noticed this one slipped through without an answer way back when - apologies. The reason we have banner adverts is that we get a little smidgeon of revenue every time a page is requested with an ad at the top (more if people click on it from time to time ) - and most ads nowadays flash because they think you're more likely to notice what they are selling if they do. To give you a rough guide this sort of generic banner advertising will probably raise about £5k for the mumsnet coffers this year - wish we didn't have to have it but it's a very useful addition to our slightly precarious finances and until some kind of enormously wealthy benefactor turns up, we'll have to live with them. We do pledge no pop-ups though - at least not unless they are offering us the moon for them in which case we'll ask your permission first .
