Why doesn't italics and bold work?

I can't get the symbols and ^ to work. Why is this? I can't see what I am doing wrong. used to work!

Worked fine for me - are you maybe putting spaces between the * and the words(s) you want in bold?

How are you doing it? It seems to work for me. But not both together any more, that used to.
