We went to Normandy in July 94, just after the 50th anniversary of the DDay landings - it was very interesting!

We'd been in 1990 as well - visited the cemeteries on a miserable wet horrible day with children aged 8, 5 and nearly 2. They were fascinated.

I loved it - very moving - especially some of the massive American cemeteries around Omaha beach. Then again I did used to teach it - it's important for kids to experience stuff like that instead of going to a hotel in Spain every year.

Oh and there was the food and wine to keep me going too

We plan to go when ds2 is a bit bigger. My brother went a couple of years ago and found it very moving. My Grandad helped take Pegasus Bridge and I think there's a museum there now and a memorial.

My dad would have been just up the coast from him moo (came ashore and was seriously wounded at Hermanville-s-Mer).
Dad was back there in 1994 too Wendy - he got a campaign medal and a smacking kiss from the Prefet of Basse-Normandie, to his considerable surprise.
I am biased because I lived in Normandy for a year but I think it is the friendliest and most civilised place - generally pro the Brits, the French is clear and easy to understand, the scenery and the beaches are outstanding and not crammed with people in high season.
Plus it witnessed events that were the turning point in WWII on the Western front. So,beautiful, and interesting. The Memorial de la Paix in Caen complements the visits to the War Cemeteries.
You should go Liesel. Normandy is fab.

I'd go and will definitely take DD when she's older.

DH has..indirectly..we went on holiday to Normandy a few years ago and he took DSS to see some bits & bobs while I stayed on the campsite with DSD and went swimming

They got horrendously lost and I was worried. They did eventually turn up hours later.

The area around Bayeux I thought was lovely

I went with school at A-level round the WWI sites, (I didn't do history, we had an English teacher who was a Wilfred Owen buff.)
I was surprised at how emotional I found it, I think we all were, but it was a really interesting and educational week.
It was November so it rained all week, but there was also a lot of nice food and beer involved, and even a brush with death when the teacher parked the van inches away from a live shell which had be left at the side of a field by a farmer to be collected by the authorities.

Not exactly Playa del Sol, but I'd love to go back, and if the rain stayed away I'd enjoy it much more than Playa del Sol anyway.

Strangely enough, Marina, I watched the last half hour of "The Longest Day" at 7 o'clock this morning (ds1 is into all things war and it's one of his favourites - he didn't have time to finish watching it last night before bed).

I think the older I get, the more profoundly I'm affected by thinking about that generation - and all they did. Your post has made me even more determined to go to Normandy

I would. I wouldn't go to France specifically for that reason but I would be interested in visiting those types of sites.

DS1 is off to France with the school later this year. They specifically go to visit the war cemeteries and they lay a wreath every year (always Year 8s). I do think it is important for the boys to see what the real cost of war is.

I have been and it is incredibly moving - the exhibition on the beaches is really good. The children really found it interesting too.

There are lots of other great things to do in Normandy too!

i went as a child. think i was maybe 10, sister 8. grandparents took us to normandy for a week. trip to the beaches and cemetery. we liked it, grandad told us about the war etc. wasn't the entire holiday though, just a day.
