Quoting other posters

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I was reading a thread where someone from MNHQ quotes another poster and I was so jealous - the poster's name was bolded and her words were formatted into an italisised paragraph. It's not something we can easily do with the tools in our message box.

Does MNHQ have a fancy little quote button they can click on under our posts, or was that formatting done manually? If they do have a button, can we get one too??!

Italicising is easypeasy , athing - just type a ^ immediately before the first letter of the first word you want to italicise and another immediately after the last letter of the last word.

Bold is done the same way, but using a * instead of a ^ .

It's really not hard to quote another poster without fancy tools.

I have nothing to add, it's all been said for me.

optimist1 used two ^ in that post, so most of it ended up italicised instead of showing the actual characters. The other markup characters used in similar way, paired round the word/sentence/para are - for strike through and _ for underline (though few people use that one)

Accidental pairing of the * character leads to odd bolding on threads discussing gcse and a level results or uni offers.

So, to answer your question - we do indeed have a fancy little quote button. But... as others have said, you can replicate it without the actual button. I tried to demonstrate how but I can't do it without it actually appearing as a quote rather than as the explanation iyswim.

Ok, I guess I'll just have to do it manually. sighs in dramatic fashion
