Targeted Ads on MN

Are there targeted ads on MN? There seem to be some based on my browsing.

If so - are they cookie based? So you sell a 'space' and ads appear based on browsing?

or are they segmented - so MN itself is asked to put an ad on a page that appeals to a certain demographic?

MN uses Google ads, which are based on your cookies.

If you go to the website youronlinechoices.eu, you can clear all the companies tracking you, log into a website, and see how many new cookies you pick up. Not too many from MN after reading a few threads.
