Top bar advertising

MN, PLEASE fix this advertising bar at the top of the computer screen.

It is so large, that I can't actually click on any of the MN links that are at the top of the page. (eg, active, I'm on, etc).

Right now, on Site Stuff, I can't even click 'Site Stuff' to get other threads in this section. It's hidden by the ad, which is NOT scrolling up and away the way I've seen others do. It's just sitting there. The ONLY threads I can get onto are the active ones on the right hand side of the screen, and only the ones lower down the list as the top ones are hidden by the Ad. (Experian and Marks and Spencers, are the two so far....)

You did this before, we all complained, you apologised and said it shouldn't have been loaded on as you were testing something new. I really hope this was a mistake, because it is IMPOSSIBLE to navigate the site.

well I guess then Justine might to employ tech experts of the standard relax is used to, whilst she waits for her private plane landing on Necker

Laiste · 26/10/2017 11:55

I have the same as hiddley.

I have ad blockers on so I have the drop down blank space where the ad would be - with the whirly thing. It blocks out the top half/third of the page for 16 seconds. Every page. Every refresh.

I now just says 'advertisement' instead of the lights out message.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/10/2017 12:56

If I had to pay to be here I’d expect a lot more robust safeguarding of data because it would then include financial data and I’d also expect paid moderation 24/7 and none of this no one at weekends and evening stuff relying on volunteers that goes on at the minute

The difficulty, of course, is that it's easy to find out whether proper, paid mods have been put in place, decent security less so ... until it all goes wrong Hmm I also wonder if the blizzards of ads would be any different on a paid site?

And yes, I also still have just the word "advertisement" and the twirly circle for 15 seconds ...

brasty · 26/10/2017 12:58

ssd Why are you being so rude?

Bucketsandspoons · 26/10/2017 12:58

Oh PLEASE stop this ruddy drop down covering the whole ruddy page on every single new page clicked on. Angry Life is too short for this.

It's infuriating. If it helps to feed back to advertisers: its making me loathe every product forcibly jammed in my face.

reflexfaith · 26/10/2017 13:02

I doubt there would be any ads on a paid for site because there would be hardly any members here to see the ads.... Advertisers wouldn't bother.
Some people seem to be under the impression that lots of people would actually pay to use Mumsnet, hardly anyone would want to pay and out of those who might want to most of them couldn't be bothered to setup and payments or wouldn't Trust Mumsnet to keep their data safe
it would become a ghost website

mrsm43s · 26/10/2017 13:04

Another one saying please, please stop the drop down advertising which covers half the page for several seconds on every single page. It's making mumsnet virtually unsuable, and I can't keep using mumsnet if this continues.

Bucketsandspoons · 26/10/2017 13:05

Its just not usable. Trying to read my 'i'm on' threads, it's just too unpleasant and annoying experience, too hard to find and read amongst all the page jumping and the drop downs and the buggering about.

I've managed to read about two threads, so fed up I'm giving up.

Bucketsandspoons · 26/10/2017 13:05

Do ad blockers stop this? Anyone? What do I download?

mrsm43s · 26/10/2017 13:24

I've just downloaded Adblocker (as a direct result of these changes - own goal there, Mumsnet!) and it doesn't stop the drop down completely, but it does seem to stop it dropping down so far, and I'd say it makes it a better experience, and less unusable. And as a bonus, it's blocked all the other annoying adverts at the side etc that I had previously been happy to tolerate.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/10/2017 13:26

Here you go, Bucketsandspoons adblockplus.org/

It's really easy to use, too (it must be or I wouldn't have been able to do it!!) Grin

reflexfaith · 26/10/2017 13:27

I have an ad blocker on my PC but I don't have one on my Android tablet
can anyone recommend one?

brasty · 26/10/2017 13:30

Ghostery prevents cookies you don't want either. Someone on MN recommended it to me this morning, so have installed it. Apparently provides better security - don't ask me to explain why, I don't understand it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/10/2017 13:31

To be fair, let's remember this isn't just about Mumsnet ... I've just clicked on the taskbar logo for my adblocking site and in about 8 months it appears to have blocked over 234,000 (and no, that isn't a typo)

It all makes things SO much easier ...

User843022 · 26/10/2017 13:32

After being on my tablet I've tried the p.c, but its the same, one ad box at the top and a couple small ads down the side, neither which is obtrusive or affects loading pages.

Again, I'm not suggesting people are exaggerating just to whip others up into a frenzy Grin, but maybe alter your settings. It can't just be my p.c and tablet that don't have ads taking over?

LazyDailyMailJournos · 26/10/2017 13:32

Just a quick note about AdBlock - they are free to use and run entirely on donations, so if you have downloaded it and liked it then please consider making a donation.

reflexfaith · 26/10/2017 13:34

Ok so I've just downloaded the adblock browser and there are now no adverts on mumsnet👍

reflexfaith · 26/10/2017 13:35

Is there an adblock at the works with Chrome on Android though?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/10/2017 13:40

if you have downloaded it and liked it then please consider making a donation

Already done Wink

Admittedly I didn't donate until I knew it really worked, but what really impressed me is that they didn't pester me with endless requests ... so I actually ended up sending more than I otherwise might have done

brasty · 26/10/2017 13:43

Myrtle I am using chrome. I am not tech savvy so have the default settings on my PC. If there is some way to alter settings to stop the issues, then MN should consider sharing this. Lots of people on here I suspect will just be using default settings like me.

C8H10N4O2 · 26/10/2017 13:44

It's only ads! work on your resilience while they try to improve it. What a load of whingeing even after they've listened to your gripes.

A number of users have said very clearly that they cannot use the site with some of the ad formats.

Others have said its eating up their data allowance (how much money do you think they should find to fund the ads?) and that it breaks accessibility.

But so long as you're ok? Hmm

Incidentally poor performing ad models and basic compliance to accessibility should be picked up during design, build and test. They are much cheaper to do at that stage as well as saving customer alienation.

Its also not the case that you use the site for free if you don't accept ads. Well not if there is a standard business model in place.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/10/2017 13:48

Its also not the case that you use the site for free if you don't accept ads. Well not if there is a standard business model in place

I wonder if you could expand on that a bit please? (Only keep it simple so I can cope!! Wink)

User843022 · 26/10/2017 13:52

'I am not tech savvy so have the default settings on my PC'
No, I'm not either that's why m surprised I don't have a problem. Nexus tablet, chrome on P.C.

No C8, I'm not saying 'so long as I'm ok' Confused, I'm saying , there must be a way to reduce the ads 'taking over'.

brasty · 26/10/2017 13:53

Grin This is not about resilience. As I have said on here I no longer post for support as too many threads are picked up by DM.
So I only post really when bored. Ironically because of tech issues at my workplace, that has been a lot more recently. If a site is too difficult to use, then why would I bother? This is not about resilience, but simply wanting a site that I can use that does not majorly irritate me because it is so hard to read what I want on it. Installing an ad blocker last night, has suddenly made it fine to use.

If MN do resolve the issues, I will be fine with seeing adverts again. But not sure why it is so wrong not to struggle on while the issues are so major.

I am also surprised that it wasn't picked up in the testing stage. But someone tried to explain to me how the most basic testing model might not have - although I didn't really understand their explanation, except that MN must have used a very basic testing model.

brasty · 26/10/2017 13:55

Myrtle I am mystified then. Do you have the latest version of word? I do.
