Problem with read threads not changing colour...

Ok MN, so now you've fixed the problem with bookmarking Grin. For some time now, when I've read a thread, it temporarily changes colour, to show I've read it, then will change back to 'unread colour' at some point and then I'm reading a thread again that I'm not interested in because the title wasn't memorable enough for me to remember. First world problem, I know.... I'm using Chrome on laptop.

Hello, sorry! Was checking this one with Tech and failed to post to say it's on our radar Hmm

Once we've heard from tech as to what's happening here we'll post again, thanks!

AmyGMumsnet · 18/10/2017 13:20

Hello, thanks for posting! We've chased Tech on this one, will post once we've got a bit more info from them about this.

DawnMumsnet · 28/10/2017 19:26

So sorry, SpongeBob - we've given the Tech team another nudge.

LornaMumsnet · 18/12/2017 12:24

Hi folks,

So we're trying to get to the bottom of this and the tech team think that this only happens in private browsing! Is this the case for you, OP? Are you using private browsing?

TraceyTech · 26/01/2018 11:15

So sorry you are having problems with this. MNHQ Tech will take a look at this and see why this is happening.

TraceyTech · 29/01/2018 09:50

We do definitely care, very sorry for the delay in getting this sorted.

We have moved it up to the top of our priority, so hopefully will have this fixed very soon.

Tracey

TraceyTech · 30/01/2018 10:12

Sorry for the delay!

Visited links show depending on browser history. This varies depending on the browser you are using.

Chrome - has a default setting of 90 days, you can't change this.
Firefox - keeps by number of pages rather than days
Safari - you can change this in preferences under "remove history items"

So after a period of time/lots of browsing things will get removed from your browser history depending on which browser you are using.

TraceyTech · 30/01/2018 14:43

Hi There SpongeBob...

" it temporarily changes colour, to show I've read it, then will change back to 'unread colour' at some point "

I think that was in the original post? So it does change colour then changes back at some point?

If however it's not changing colour for you at all then that might be a setting on the browser you are using, which I think you said is chrome?

TraceyTech · 31/01/2018 09:43

Hi,

You are quite right I forgot to include Explorer in my list of browsers, it is something that all browsers do.

This is because it is a feature of the browser and depends on your browser history and how the browser manages the history of pages you have visited. This is something controlled by the browser you are using at the time.

So for example you may look at a thread on safari then look at a link to that same thread on another browser and it won't show as visited, because you are using a different browser.

The browser searches it's history to determine whether a link is visited or not. Once the user deletes the browser history, or the browser history expires (which is different for each browser), a link will stop showing as visited. The browser history is stored slightly differently depending on which browser you are using.

Browsers keep track of all web pages you visit on the web, after some time the pages you have visited will expired from your browser history, and will no longer show as visited.

Hey guys, thanks for raising the issue with the app, we'll look into it!

DawnMumsnet · 10/02/2018 20:20

Hi SpongeBob,

Well, this is a merry old dance, isn't it?! Sad

This is my understanding of what you're telling us (and have been telling us since October)

  1. You're using the Chrome browser on the desktop site.
  1. When you've read a thread, it used to be the case that it would change colour (so you'd know that you'd read it).
  1. This was a handy feature, and it pleased you mightily.
  1. Since October, it seems that the colour change function has stopped working. Not every single time, but enough times to be annoying.
  1. This means that you often end up reading the same thread again. Which is a waste of your time (especially if the thread was a dull one in the first place).
  1. Our Tech team have suggested various reasons for this.
  1. You (and many others) have quashed said reasons. And made it clear that NO, YOU'RE NOT USING PRIVATE BROWSING.
  1. And also, NO, YOU'RE NOT SWITCHING BROWSERS.
  1. And also, NO, YOU HAVEN'T DELETED YOUR BROWSING HISTORY.
  1. And what's more, it's happening even when there are NO NEW (UNREAD) POSTS ON A THREAD.

  2. It happens on both 'Threads I'm On' and 'Threads I'm Watching' lists.

  3. It's happening on a multitude of browsers - Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Explorer, you name it...

  4. It happens on the App IN ADDITION to the desktop site. And has done since early last year, despite updates, reinstalling the app, etc.

  5. It's really, really, really annoying.

Does that about cover it, @SpongeBobJudgeyPants ?

If so, what can I say? Except sorry! And that I'll get this laminated and sent over to Tech right now. Smile

DawnMumsnet · 10/02/2018 22:38

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants

Yes Dawn, that's about it. I would say it was all the time now though, giving me no relief from my first world problem. It also happens on Internet Explorer for me.

Oh lordy, it's even worse than I thought, then...

TraceyTech · 13/02/2018 11:08

Hi there,

Is this definitely happening on the same day? so you will view/post on a thread and that same day the thread will reset to unvisited?

Tracey

DawnMumsnet · 16/02/2018 19:50

Thanks Spongebob , Olympic and mummabubs. And NinaMarieP - I've flagged your post to our Tech team in case it helps with the investigation.

Can only apologise (again) that this issue still hasn't been resolved. If I could do anything to help, I would, but to be honest I have to get my kids to help me with the Sky remote so I'm best off out of any IT matters. All I can do for now is keep passing on your comments.

Sorry, folks.

TraceyTech · 27/02/2018 09:27

@OlympicBonfire which threads is this happening with?

SophieLMumsnet · 27/02/2018 09:28

Sorry, everyone! We know it's incredibly frustrating. We've just this moment nudged tech, so please do bear with us and we'll hopefully have them on the case this morning. Flowers

TraceyTech · 27/02/2018 11:23

ok great thanks If you could add the link to the one that stayed as visited too? I am going to see if there's anything I can spot about that would make them behave differently

TraceyTech · 28/02/2018 09:24

I cannot see anything about those threads that would make them become un-visited links.

ok so when you look in the history for the browser you are using can you find the links in there?

you can search for them in the search bar at the top of the history settings page. So for example to find this thread in your history you would just need to type something like "Threads not" and you should be able to find it in there.

FlissMumsnet · 11/03/2018 14:40

NinaMarieP that sounds really annoying - we're so sorry this keeps happening. We're struggling to understand why this is a sporadic problem but we'll send this one back to Tech and see if they can replicate this.

Sorry it's such a faff - we'll get this sorted for you all as soon as we can.

DawnMumsnet · 17/03/2018 14:19

We know, we know. Sad

Our Tech team are on the case here, but they still haven't been able to establish what's causing this.

Huge apologies (again!) for all the frustration this is causing.

DawnMumsnet · 21/03/2018 17:46

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants

No-one cares. No one! Sad

Oh @SpongeBobJudgeyPants, I care, I care!

But unfortunately I'm no use to you at all from an IT point of view...

And I'm afraid to go knocking on the Tech team door again in case they set the dogs on me. Shock

DawnMumsnet · 26/03/2018 10:12

So sorry, everyone. I'm heading off to talk to our Tech team again now.

I may be some time... Sad

TraceyTech · 24/04/2018 10:45

Hi There,

We continue to look into this problem and we are trying to find a fix, however not being able to reproduce the problem is making this quite difficult.

I understand how frustrating this must be, we will continue to work on this to find a solution.

If you continue to have this problem, please give the details of what platform you are using ie, app (iphone/android please specify), desktop/mobile website, and browser. This will help us identify where the problem might be happening.

TimMumsnet · 25/04/2018 09:24

Hi guys, thanks for bumping this issue on the app - you're right, it's something that needs addressing, and I'll prioritise it this week. Apologies for the delay!

EstherMumsnet · 02/05/2018 09:51

Tim is still looking into this, I promise!
