Slightly insensitive ad or is it me? *Trigger warning* [Edited by MNHQ]

Might be feeling over sensitive as I know of a few people who have had bad news recently but the ad on the main Talk 'active threads' page for 'Baby Alive' seems a little insensitive considering a lot of people come here for support with miscarriage and infant losses...

It just took me aback when I saw it, juxtaposed with an active thread about someone who had recently received bad news at a scan.

I know it's just a doll, and we can't avoid seeing baby things etc - I think it's the name more than anything....

I haven't seen the ad but I think 'Baby Alive' is a bizarre thing to call something Confused . I may be biased as my baby died but I do think it's at best a thoughtless name for something.

whyhastherumgone · 27/09/2017 13:29

Yes me too...not blaming Mumsnet for the name of course, just really took me aback.

So sorry for your loss @GoldenFlaps

Thank fuck I didn't see it. What a shit name for a product.
We lost two babies last year and I continue to struggle hugely, that would push me over the edge today.

whyhastherumgone · 27/09/2017 13:30

Oh gosh, sorry I didn't realise everyone wouldn't see it - maybe it's tailored? Although I had a MMC last year that I posted about on here...

Really sorry to draw attention to it if people haven't seen it. Happy to report the post, as that really wasn't my aim, I assumed everyone could see the same ad...

Thank you, why, it was a long time ago so not so raw now. Sorry for your loss too Flowers

Frazzle Flowers

I've contacted Mumsnet and asked for a warning to be put in title - really don't want to upset anyone who hasn't seen it.

Frazzle, so so sorry for your loss too x

I think the toy itself is actually called Baby Alive.

SaturnUranus · 27/09/2017 13:35

As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew which advert it would be about.

I agree that the name seems very insensitive on a site like this one.

2014newme · 27/09/2017 13:36

My sister had baby alive doll 40 years ago. It's not new

AnnieAnoniMouse · 27/09/2017 13:40

Baby Alive has been a doll for well over 40 years. It was one of the first ones you could feed & she'd poop etc. Hence the name.

DancingLedge · 27/09/2017 21:52

Went from death of a baby thread to ' baby alive ' advert.
Not on.

whyhastherumgone · 27/09/2017 22:09

I know it's been a brand for ages, but I just thought it wasn't the best placed ad considering the content of this site. As I said, could be me being over sensitive.

I don't think you're being over sensitive at all!! Given the context of MN - where a huge number of women are posting and following on TTC threads or miscarriage threads.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/09/2017 23:31

I'm sick of looking at the bloody ad,it looks like a blow up doll! Plus you're right,it's a horribly insensitive name.

LornaMumsnet · 28/09/2017 10:25

Hi all,

Thanks so much for flagging.

We're just waiting to hear back from our sales team.

We've updated the title at the OP's request.

Flowers

Thanks Lorna :)

Hi all,

Really sorry some of you have been upset by this.

Overall we think it's actually a pretty good fit for us - lots of MNers have kids in the age range (and we were also impressed that they'd included a boy in their ads). But we do understand your point about those MNers who've come to seek support on related issues so we're removing it from all sensitive Talk topics immediately.
