Problem with quoting other users in a reply

14 replies

DodgyGround · 22/08/2017 11:25

@mumsnet
Whenever I use the @ function it brings up a handy list of names on the thread, so I can pick the right one.

However it then saves it in some sort of memory, so it shows on a different thread (where that particular username isn't present).

This is quite confusing and so is quite like to delete it if possible, so it can be fresh on each thread rather than remember every username I've ever quoted.

I'm using the app, on iPhone 7, if that helps.

Hi @DodgyGround - thanks for raising this.

We included the 'previously used usernames' function as a way of giving you access to usernames you've quoted recently. It's common for users to pull in other users who weren't already there, and we wanted to make that easier.

The cache is limited, so it will only save the most recent X users

What I could potentially do is either:

  1. Highlight the users on the current thread, so it's easier to see who's on the thread, and who you just quoted ages ago.
  2. Give usernames you've used a ranking, so regularly mentioned users are closer to the top.

Would either of these help? Alternatively, deleting and reinstalling the app will totally clear the cache, but that's a lot of effort...

@DodgyGround

just testing wow i did not know about this 🤓 would i get a notification if someone called me a dick by name mentioned me?

DodgyGround · 22/08/2017 20:55

Hi Tim, hanks for the options (what a service!). I think option 1 would make all the difference if it's easy enough to do your end? Thanks

@abigailgabble theoretically that's possible, though I'm sure you'd be more likely to get people tag you to say how lovely you are 😝

@abigailgabble

I mentioned you in another thread?
A direct question.
Were you notified?

TimMumsnet · 23/08/2017 16:16

@abigailgabble yup, unless you have the setting switched off (on the web), you will receive an email notification. In the future we hope to add push notification options.

@DodgyGround great thanks for the feedback, I’ll discuss it with the rest of the team. 👍🏼

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/08/2017 23:38

@TimMumsnet I don't get any sort of menu of posters' names when I '@' - I have to type in whichever name I want Confused

TimMumsnet · 24/08/2017 09:57

@BoreOfWhabylon are you using the most recent version of the iOS app? I don't think it's yet available on other platforms yet.

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/08/2017 21:31

Ah no @TimMumsnet - I use the desktop site on ipad safari.

So that'll be why then Grin

TimMumsnet · 25/08/2017 09:57

That would explain! Perhaps this could be a good opportunity to try it out? Wink

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/08/2017 10:01

Noooooooooo! I like my desktop site I do not like change! Grin

00100001 · 25/08/2017 22:31

Why can't we just have a quote function like every other forum? Confused

Sparklingbrook · 25/08/2017 22:41

I never use the @ function and I have mine switched off. I don't see the point in it.
