Bad Mother - the new comedy series exclusive to Mumsnet

Hello all,

Come and have a look at the very first episode of , a new comedy web series which we'll be showing exclusively on Mumsnet over the next six weeks.

It's a very relatable (and very sweary) show that we hope you'll enjoy - each episode is about five minutes long, so just right for watching with a (microwaved) cuppa while the kids run wild entertain themselves.

We'll remind you on our Mumsnet Facebook page every time a new episode goes live - so if you're not yet following us, now's the time to do so.

The series follows a beleaguered stay-at-home mum (Star Stories' Laura Patch, with Kevin Bishop as her husband) who's trying her best not to bugger up this parenting lark. Each episode tackles a particularly challenging parenting scenario - so if you've ever muttered under your breath about other people's children, dreaded yet another playdate, or felt some affinity with the phrase 'benign neglect', we think you'll find something to snigger over in Bad Mother.

Let us know what you think.

MNHQ

Yes!!!!

This was okay, but I suspect it will be blown out of the water when Sharon Horgan's 'Motherland' appears on the BBC. Are Mumsnet trying to steal her thunder? If so I think they've failed.

SleightOfHand · 03/07/2017 16:59

I like the second episode, I thought it was funny.

Shitalopram · 03/07/2017 17:48

ummm... is it still the 90s? Has Bridget Jones not been written yet?

PacificDogwod · 03/07/2017 19:02

2nd episode make me snarf but I do find the main character a bit pathetic now - although she makes good points. I fought hard to not be the DefaultParent

brexitstolemyfuture · 04/07/2017 10:11

A second episode appeared in my recommendations, I only lasted 1 min. Seriously might be worth pulling the plug on this and retooling. Can't see it doing anything in current format.

I thought the second episode was good-much better than the first

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 09/07/2017 19:37

Have a heart you lot! A real person wrote this and presumably is reading the critics with her eyes screwed up and her heart pounding.

I'm enjoying it. It's 5 minutes of situation where the end is a sign-off rather than a 'hilarious punchline making the whole thing worth while'. It's character type - and why not this one as much as any other they might have chosen? - but just this side of caricature. We don't need to see the kids because it's not about them, it's about her. And thank god, because child actors are all bloody awful.

I'll keep watching, whereas I only lasted 15 minutes of Outnumbered in total because the whole family made me want to kill myself and I seriously considered not having kids myself on the strength of it.

user1495025590 · 09/07/2017 20:28

I think the problem is that the characters are not really likeable like the mum and dad on outnumbered. I can relate to the outnumbered family but the 'bad numbered' parents are just too posh and MC and the swearing is kind of childish and try hard.

What are we supposed to do? Say nothing when we find something awful. That's what you might do with a young child.

I'm an artist, sometimes I get things right and sometimes they go horribly wrong and I get crusified on social media. When they go wrong it's still a learning curve. If someone can't take harsh criticisms they are in the wrong job.

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 09/07/2017 22:42

Fair enough brexit. Looking at the comments again it's the Episode 2 thread that really made me think the filter between 'what I think in my head' and 'how the words come out of my mouth' had got lost.

I'm sorry you've been crucified on social media when people haven't liked something you've created. Why is that necessary? There are ways of giving an honest, critical opinion without being vicious.

I sometimes wish people were more like you nomnom and thought about what they said. But you get pretty used to people being ridiculous pedantic and critical on social media. Not many are mean it with malace and often the people with the worst attitude have only a few friends and hardly any likes on their personal timeline.

When I fail it's usually due to trying something new that people didn't like. I often still release something even if I'm not happy with it as I've spend days working on it and you never know what people will like.

I was critical of this mainly because it wasn't something new or original. Fair dues to them if they had of created something that hadn't been done before. So much is ahead of its time and not appreciated when its first released, sadly this isn't a case of this.

Nomdutilisateur · 21/07/2017 18:52

The babysitter one is funny.

SpockEars · 23/07/2017 17:38

In the interest of fairness I've just watched all 5 episodes.
Mumsnet should be ashamed of itself for putting its name to such utter crap. I've always suspected that MNHQ despise SAHMs and this series confirmed it.

Tottyandmarchpane1 · 24/07/2017 12:43

Oh get a grip Spockears - I work and completely identify with some of the episodes esp the play date one. I mean seriously, why on earth do I tidy for kids to come and untidy?! The only one I haven't liked is the babysitter one / it's the most unrealistic - I honestly don't think anyone would just dash out and leave their child with an unknown babysitter and not check their phone regularly if they do it. I'd have been in a serious panic to get back and find the door open even if I was drunk.

OlennasWimple · 25/07/2017 21:20

I've just watched the last episode (the babysitter one). MNHQ - have you watched it?

Someone needs to take Bad Mother (sorry, don't know her name, which seems slightly ironic given the theme of motherhood eroding women's identities...) along to an AA meeting, she is seriously using it as a crutch.

And is the ending supposed to be funny? Woman is so drunk that she completely forgets she needs to be home for the babysitter, fails to answer her phone and comes back to find her children with no responsible adult and the front door swinging open? Confused

SpockEars · 25/07/2017 21:48

I found the last episode unsettling (as well as unfunny)

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 26/07/2017 07:56

I watched the first episode and about 20 seconds of the second. Didn't enjoy it. Judging from previous posts I'm glad I didn't waste a further 5 minutes cringing to myself! Agree that's it's unfunny, I also find it patronising and too much alcohol involved.

MrsJamin · 28/07/2017 14:41

The babysitter one wasn't cool. It was mildly amusing up to then. Too much alcohol.

OlennasWimple · 29/07/2017 18:23

I'm going to ask again if MNHQ has watched these - the latest one slags off (by name) two well known baby activity franchises...

Happyeverafter73 · 05/08/2017 23:05

I liked it. It's representative of a lot of threads we see here. Nowt wrong with that.
