I have just CAT a mn for the first time in ages. Just checked inbox and have received an email asking me to click on reply and send to activate it so MNtowers could read it and send it on to the mn in question. (apparently so MNtowers dont get loads of spam)

What shocked me is that before mn have read and authorized my message I have on my screen that persons email address. ie if I wanted to I could potentially send that person an abusive email etc.

What do you think?

Yes I had that last week - meant to do something about it but clean forgot !!!

Tis definitely a bit risky - makes the whole CAT thing a lot less safe imho !

Tech - can you do anything ??

Yurtgirl · 08/03/2007 22:16

Is is just me and scatterbrain then?

That's not supposed to happen. Could you send me a copy of the email (the one asking you to reply).

Thanks,
Tech

Oh Doh - I deleted mine the other day - hopefully Yurtgirl will be back and can send hers !! Or I could try it again !!

Marina · 09/03/2007 11:06

This happened to another Mner too Tech.

I don't know if she mailed you about it though, I am going to send her a link to this thread.

I've not seen it myself but there is definitely something amiss here.

Thanks

Bagpuss30 · 09/03/2007 11:06

I had this too.

dejags · 09/03/2007 11:13

I had this too - and the MNetter in question would probably not want her email address made available. In fact I can say that with absolute certainty.

scatterbrain · 09/03/2007 11:15

I've just tried to CAT Yurtgirl to see if I get the same thing today - but so far nothing !!

Maybe tis fixed ?

JustineMumsnet · 09/03/2007 12:20

Apologies for this - there was a slight loophole in our system which Tech has plugged very tightly. Many thanks for raising it.

Hi there,

Yes, sorry about this. When the CAT got sent, it was cc'd to MNHQ so that they could keep an eye on them / be sure everything was working.

Unfortunately, a couple of them now have a spam filter that bounces mails back to the sender to make sure the sender is a person. On a cat, the reply address is the person sending the cat, so they got the bounce message. We've disabled that now, so it won't happen again.

We are planning to introduce a (basic) private message system in MyMumsnet to replace the current CAT process.

The idea is that when you set the option whether you'll receive CAT messages, you choose one of

  1. No no never
  2. Yes, in my private messages on mumsnet.
  3. In my private messages and also a copy to my email.

When you get a CAT you'll be able to either reply to them by mail or on the site - in short a bit like the way ebay does it.

It'll be a few weeks though until we can get to that.

Regards,
Tech

will we still have to pay to contact another person?

Tamum · 09/03/2007 19:20

Yes, I reported this twice a good few weeks ago. I was on the verge of starting a thread about it because it was a very real concern. Glad it's sorted now.

MamaBree · 12/03/2007 21:49

[excited] I've wanted private messaging for ages (not in a narniabitch way ) but trust you to introduce it just after I paid my fiver so I could say soz to cod! [bah]

Yurtgirl · 16/03/2007 08:05

Only just got back online to see this - glad its sorted now.

Tissy - tis well worth paying a fiver as as far as i know mn isnt exactly a multi million pound money spinner, Even if you are only on MN once a week £5 is harldy alot

I dont begrudge £5 to the mn team at all given all the benefits of mn!

I've had this too and the spam email I got came from Carrie.
I've never had it before.
