Why do some deleted posts still show in search results?

I am guessing they are from Chat. If posts are purged and can't be read, why have them appear in search results so that people click through and end up with the biscuit page? They could be obstructing more useful results.
Is it only for a short time after initial deletion? Or are they there forever, in a nefarious scheme to increase page views yet further? :D
