How about a campaign where the users get MNHQ staff to take diversity training?

MNHQ themselves have displayed ignorance (at best) over the last few months and prejudice / discrimination at worst when dealing with certain situations.
For example Justine, the sites owner herself over the last few days has made some very ignorant and damaging comments about diabetes.
We have seen the same with many times with Racism too as well as low level disablism.

Unless you are white, middle class and able bodied HQ isn't a nice place to be.

Post here if you would like this to take place. HQ need training and they need it fast.

lol

The anti-trans voices are heard loud and clear. I agree it wasn't needed here.

rawsienna · 06/11/2016 16:05

I genuinely don't understand why people think they have a sense of ownership over it (to go as far as direct what training they think staff should get) yet somehow also hate it and are angered by it. Yes there are things that I object to on here but I would never think to demand this or that from MNHQ. I can delete my account at any time. It would have no impact for MN at all.

I agree with this.
If you don't like the site, don't use it. MN don't owe us anything. I don't always agree with their decisions, but I realize that I'm guest, same as we all are and its a bit of a cheek to start laying down the law and suggest they go on training courses, just to fit in with how you think they should be running things.
If you feel so strongly about things, why not start your own site? You seem to think it's really easy.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/11/2016 16:24

I'm not often on threads that discuss disabilities (although I think what I'm about to say applies to all contentious subjects).

It's seems to me that there are two issues.

  1. Where someone comes onto a board and posts something that is blatantly disablist and is just being a goady fucker - easy to spot, easy to delete.
  1. The other scenario tends to go that someone posts something. One or two posters will take massive umbrage at what has been said and go into attack mode, attacking anyone who does not agree that it is offensive, and attacking MNHQ for not deleting immediately. Meanwhile more and more people come on thread to explain why it is not offensive and thread is derailed into a bunfight.

Because one or two people find something offensive does.not mean something should be deleted. The world is not an offence free zone. In general I think that if majority opinion is that something isn't an ism or hate attack than it should be allowed to stand. One person's opinion is not more valid than another person's opinion.

MaddyHatter · 06/11/2016 16:26

why do people persist in the 'don't like it, fuck off' frame of mind?

Its perfectly fine to use a site, be content with the majority of it, yet have an issue with one small aspect of it, and want that one thing to be dealt with.

Why do people feel that us trying to tackle the ingrained disablism means we hate the site and all it involves?

Exactly.

One person's opinion is not more valid than another person's opinion

This is very true and something that a few people seem to forget whilst they are demanding and making personal attacks on MNHQ staff.

*It's just like certain people are waiting and hoping for someone to say something/anything that they can shout "disablist" at and then the pack arrives and start picking and picking.

The thread then gets completely derailed and the poor op is driven off. It's nothing more than bullying in reality. There's no reasoning or debating*

This is a very accurate summation. I have seen many threads go this way. It's always the same four or five posters who try to take over the thread, and make it about them.

I have no idea why they do it, and what they get out if it. It's bafflingConfused,

BishopBrennansArse · 06/11/2016 17:01

I have never told anyone else what to think. I do make it clear how I and some others I know who are disabled feel about it, though.

If you are disabled and disagree then it doesn't really matter, does it? If you have the majority backing you then why do you need to try and suppress differing views?

Why do those with who share majority views shout down and try to silence those who differ?

Or should those who see misogyny be silenced? Or racism? Or homophobia or xenophobia?

BishopBrennansArse · 06/11/2016 17:03

And actually people do have a deliberate field day posterity covert stuff either late at night or at the weekend. One post regarding not taking SN kids out in the community was left for three days.

A bit like posters who pop up on threads just to bitchplop then, petit?

petitpois55 · 06/11/2016 17:16

BBA You can't help yourself can you.

TiggyD · 06/11/2016 17:19

I think it would be of benefit if some outside diversity group were to go through Mumsnet's policies and procedures. They'll either get told "Hey guys! You're doing just great!" or "There's some room for improvement. Let's order a take-out and have a thought shower session on ways you can do things even better!"

But Justine won't. Probably for the same reason I didn't take up my local health centre's 'well man' check-up for my 40th birthday. It's better to not know if there's something wrong than have a check-up and risk finding out for certain.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 06/11/2016 17:24

People seem to assume what MNHQ do or don't do or what they have done.....

BishopBrennansArse · 06/11/2016 17:24

Neither can you, petit.

crashdoll · 06/11/2016 17:26

By the same token, there are some people who always crop up on certain threads to be aggressive and to shout their views. And no, I'm not just talking about disability threads.

Saucery · 06/11/2016 17:26

Yes, Piglet, they do indeed. They seem to reach their conclusions based on Do MN Appear To Agree With My POV.

crashdoll · 06/11/2016 17:27

"If you have the majority backing you then why do you need to try and suppress differing views?"

Because we get verbally attacked for disagreeing with the minority.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 06/11/2016 17:28

Tiggy - no 'outside diversity group' is going to say "Hey you're doing great!" 'cause they wouldn't be able to charge £££££s for it.

Itsall - I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It's the 2nd scenario you mention that people have the problem with, not the first.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 06/11/2016 17:31

Do you not see the issue of trans kids as being an able/disable thing, IPity? It's gearing up kids for a lifetime of medication. It sterilizes them. If you care about children's psychological and physical health it's a big deal. I get that some people aren't interested (bloody trans again) but it's kinda weird to see that opinion expressed on a thread discussing ugly attitudes to health.
