Please MNHQ...PLEASE can we have an edit button?

Even just a five minute timed one. Just for spelling mistakes and so on....

I often don't realise I have misspelled something until I read it in context with the thread. The preview does not help with this either.
I itch to correct myself and I can't be alone in that surely?

Go on go on go on. Ye will ye will ye will.

Please???

MN are not being hypocritical either. If someone has inadvertently caused an upset they will change our posts for us too, not just their own.

ThisIsReallyNotMyName · 15/11/2016 02:27

Yes please.

OlennasWimple · 15/11/2016 02:36

I quite like the inadvertent slip ups!

I'd like a delete button, so we can delete our own posts. Sometimes, in the "heat" of things, and without really thinking, I've given away too many identifiable bits of information, and it's only when I read it back later that I think "oh, shit!"

It would be nice to be able to delete it without going through mnhq. Mainly because it would be faster for me to do it myself, especially with the Daily Fail taking so many threads for news items.

Either that or an edit function whereby others can no longer see the original post. It would show as an edited post, also giving a reason for editing, eg, too much personal info, correcting grammar, etc, but the original would no longer be visible, except maybe to hq (if that's possible). That way anyone editing posts purely for nasty reasons could be checked and held to account (if the situation ever arose).

name2change4this · 15/11/2016 04:01

I think the delete option should be without a time limit, but the edit function should have a limit set somewhere between 1hr and 24 hrs (max).

ErrolTheDragon · 15/11/2016 13:59

Name2 - no, it's probably already been discussed upthread but letting users delete or edit without being able to see the original would be abused by gaslighters and troublemakers - post something inflammatory or nasty, have the thread kick off or really upset something and then remove the evidence. And even if MNHQ still could see the post, it'd make their jobs even harder sorting out the chaos.

MrsArthurShappey · 15/11/2016 14:04

Do you know what I'd love? On AIBU when the OP accepts they were BU and says so repeatedly, but still you get people who haven't RTFT piling in. It would be great if the OP could be amended to say 'EDIT: I know I was BU so wind yer neck in unless you've RTFT and have something constructive to add'.

That would be great.

bumbleymummy · 15/11/2016 14:09

Great idea MrsA :)

Or maybe we could change the colour of the OP's post if they accept they were being unreasonable. Or the colour of the OP changes based on people's votes for BU or NBU throughout the thread...

MrsArthurShappey · 15/11/2016 14:14

Haha we could get Peter Snow and his swingometer!

Recently there have been a number of threads deleted because they have crossed the 'legal' line . Meaning some posters can accidentally get so personally touched by a thread they are unfortunately cross the line .

Time and time again this results in Mumsnet deleting the whole 'interesting' thread and sometimes 'banishing' posters to 'van Diemens' land.

Clearly a instant delete button on threads could be beneficial. A 'WARNING' could come from MNHQ telling a poster to delete a posting now otherwise they will be 'TERMINATED'.

Often posters can get banned for going over the top, but not meaning to overtly break the law or be particularly offensive or mean to another poster.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/11/2016 14:42

I dunno - if you know you overdid it, you could just post an apology on the thread and report your own post to ask MNHQ to delete it. That seems the more honest approach, and isn't so susceptible to troublemakers posting then deleting and running away.

UnGoogleable · 16/11/2016 00:30

Personally I don't really care that I can't delete stuff. It's par for the course to make typos round here.

What I do care about is the inability to delete your old threads (unless you face a serious outing) so that your posting history is here for ever and ever amen.

It seriously restricts my use of the site.

Lollollollol · 16/11/2016 09:15

I agree. I wish most threads would disappear after awhile.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/11/2016 09:34

That's why we have Chat and 30 days only - if you want to start a thread which doesn't last forever that's where to do it.

NoSuchThingAsThePerfectParent · 16/11/2016 14:41

Maybe the edited post could have a red THIS POST IS EDITED: SUGGEST READING FOR FULL CONTEXT warning on the top left hand of the edited box?

And keep the history as facebook does. I always click that, haha.

Could MN tower just trial it for a month with no promises?

ErrolTheDragon · 16/11/2016 18:39

Trouble is, I bet some people would try to subvert it even if just for humorous ends. As if MNHQ don't have enough on their hands at the moment.

WankingMonkey · 21/11/2016 15:09

An edit button would be great. I moderate on another forum where there is an edit button that 'times out' after 5 minutes. Just long enough to correct any spelling mistakes but not quite long enough to change the entire thread. plus mods can actually view what the post said before it was edited, for when people do try to troll using it. Not sure if this is possible here though...I have never asked admin there if its a built in feature of vbulletin or not. I expect it would be extra work for the MN staff though :S
