Please MNHQ...PLEASE can we have an edit button?

Even just a five minute timed one. Just for spelling mistakes and so on....

I often don't realise I have misspelled something until I read it in context with the thread. The preview does not help with this either.
I itch to correct myself and I can't be alone in that surely?

Go on go on go on. Ye will ye will ye will.

Please???

And there isn't a preview button on the phone app - is there?

Yeah, but it would abused massively.

Zucker · 05/11/2016 00:14

So basically a site for and about mostly women cannot be trusted with an edit button. Is that it?

"It's pretty standard on most forums to have a bit of control over your posts."

It's a good point. And actually it is a bit Hmm to not be afforded that here.

OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/11/2016 19:24

No. Definitely not. It would lead to re - writing of history and bun fights.

I quite like seeing the corrections.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/11/2016 19:28

And there isn't a preview button on the phone app - is there?

I thought the app only exists for iPhone?

Despite what Apple might have you think Apple has only around 20% of the smartphone market so most phone users will be using the mobile site not an app.

The Mobile site is much better and functional than the defunct Android app and preview works on it.

It would make it harder for MNHQ to moderate this humongous forum. They are some of the most involved forum mods out there, people editing posts would make it more onerous.

Plus it's not like the lack of edit has stopped the site being popular... so why fox something that isn't broken?

paxillin · 06/11/2016 10:40

No, I'm glad we don't. At least not until we have a "hide goadyfucker poster" function.

I once wrote about a bear bum when I meant bare. It would have robbed me of a chuckle about ursine arses.

Seeline · 14/11/2016 08:49

It is interesting though that MNHQ can and do edit their own posts on threads. The recent thread on the Croydon tram disaster had an inappropriate post from HQ (badly thought-out) which led to a number of other posters commenting on the post. MNHQ came back and apologised, and said that they had edited their original post. This has resulted in several posters appearing unhinged for criticising HQ for their inappropriate post, which now reads entirely differently.
Whilst this does highlight the problems of an edit button mentioned by PPs, it does also indicate double standards.

00100001 · 14/11/2016 08:52

No-one is forcing anyone to use Mumsnet. And it has become a huge phenomenon without it, so why change something that clearly works????

pictish · 14/11/2016 09:14

Because an edit facility would make it better.

OP posts:
QuimReaper · 14/11/2016 09:24

It isn't spelling and grammar issues that get me, it's the huge number of posts which come our completely incomprehensible because of an autocorrect issue. I've spent ages staring at posts sometimes trying to work out what on Earth they're supposed to say.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/11/2016 09:34

While I can see why invisible edits would be a bad idea (even with a timer), I can't see what would be the problem if the original post was still visible as well as the corrected version.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/11/2016 09:43

Errol- now THAT is a good idea, as long as the original post still stands I'd be all for an edit facility!

00100001 · 14/11/2016 09:51

quim just because there is an edit button, doesn't mean the OP would bother going back and editing it.

bumbleymummy · 14/11/2016 10:01

I think it would be fine if there was a way to see the original post too (similar to facebook). That way people can't rewrite history but they can fix mistakes/give more detail in the OP if they need to.

pictish · 14/11/2016 22:04

Yes...exactly.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 14/11/2016 22:38

Its such a good idea its suggested near the start of this thread.Grinsort of obvious.... don't know if its hard to implement.

Lollollollol · 15/11/2016 00:29

I'm glad that we can't edit posts. I say that as someone who makes loads of spelling mistakes Blush If you make a bad mistake you can just explain in a later post and if you are really the type of person who is traumatised to be seen to make a spag mistake then you should just double check your post before you press the post message button.

I'd much prefer a hide poster function. 🙈

HelenaDove · 15/11/2016 01:40

No There are certain posters who will use this function to gaslight other posters.

ILoveAutumnLeaves · 15/11/2016 02:01

I just wish people wouldn't bother correcting minor mistakes! Fine if it's an auto correct that makes no sense but 'food not good' 12 posts down is just irritating, as is 'it's not its'. We all have self correcting devices that do stupid things, it's not a reflection on your ability, so just ignore it.

Most other sites do allow editing, but compared to MN they all move like a glacier. On here it would cause chaos.
