Anyone else got a random PM from one of those user293847574737 nicknames?

It's about itchy ears? Asking me if I'm still suffering from itchy ear-crisis after 5 years! Grin

Obviously I'm going to report it officially like, but just wondered if anyone else had it? The PM I mean, not itchy ears! Grin

I assume that the ones who decide to stick around will get proper usernames eventually. Until then they're all a sort of vague anonymous entity.

user1472515172 · 09/09/2016 22:12

Unfortunately I am of the opinion that more often than not the User123455678889 posters are PBP, Goady Fuckers or just plain old twats. So I ignore/refuse to engage/take no notice of what they are saying.

That may be unfair on the 1% that aren't...but we all know that people get judged by the company they keep.

Really solid argument here. Well worth engaging with/taking notice of. Totally.

Ninasimoneinthemorning · 09/09/2016 22:19

I think if you really wanted to be taken seriously you'd take the time to actually change to a username that folk can recognise you with.

I think the default number names give users a bit of camouflage and I actually wouldn't be surprised if GF regulars were actually using them also to hide behind also.

Remember the last three digits ? Grin

Ninasimoneinthemorning · 09/09/2016 22:20

It's like trying to engage with a friggin serial number!

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 09/09/2016 22:21

Maybe some of the number people are genuine but I do think GF when I see one and scroll past

EnquiringMingeWantsToKnow · 09/09/2016 22:23

They may or may not be trolls, but they're certainly too lazy to comply with specific requests from MNHQ and abide by the site norms. In which case I'm buggered if I'm going to go out of my way to pay attention to them.

Exceptions for people who are clearly posting in an emergency and don't have time to NC. If your lemon drizzle cake has come out of the oven sagging in the middle and you've only got half an hour before the school cake bake then I'll rally round with suggestions even if you are a newly-regged former lurker.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/09/2016 22:25

I think of them as all the same person. Can't be bothered to distinguish between them quite honestly.

MindSweeper · 09/09/2016 22:26

How hard is it to just have a proper username? It's annoying when there's a thread with 3 of you on.

glenthebattleostrich · 09/09/2016 22:29

Because userfuckingwhatever we have names on here, it is site etiquette. If you don't like it other sites are available.

SaggyNaggy · 09/09/2016 22:32

I think this is the only forum on the net that forces these weird usernames and does t just let you set one when signing up.

cozietoesie · 10/09/2016 00:05

What is the reason for them? I'm intrigued. Wink

Yes. Random word generator would be better. MNHQ said they tried that but it came up with embarrassing combinations. Not sure what that could be. I can't imagine that a bona fide programme does not, by default , exclude all swear words, racial slurs, sexual references etc.

RebeccaMumsnet · 10/09/2016 13:07

As Olivia said upthread, we are on this but in the meantime, if you're happy to and have a mo, do feel free to point them in the direction of their account and ask them to NC.

We do mail them and ask but not everyone does NC asap, so small nudges would be helpful.

We are looking at the bigger issue but it may take a little while.

Thank you Flowers Grin

UmbongoUnchained · 10/09/2016 13:10

I don't even bother to read their posts. Which is a shame as maybe one of them is a real poster with something useful to say.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 11/09/2016 09:24

If using a random word generator came up with embarrassing combinations maybe they should go back to that and shame the buggers into choosing a proper name.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 11/09/2016 10:31

And at least everyone else would be able to tell the difference.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/09/2016 12:08

May I suggest MNHQ use random female elf name generator

Elf name generator
fantasynamegenerators.com/elf_names.php#.V9U6dXRwbqA

Or random female troll name generator.

Troll name generator
fantasynamegenerators.com/troll_names.php#.V9U69nRwbqA

tribpot · 11/09/2016 12:27

Both name generators do male names as well so I think this would work much better than user 0983927492834098203488028340823402834082340823048230948. It's perfectly possible to get random word generators with the rude words taken out, not sure why MNHQ is struggling with this one.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 11/09/2016 16:18

I don't think HQ ever made it quite clear what the problem with the combinations was. I can't believe they were getting the likes of BuggerWank.

paxillin · 11/09/2016 16:34

I think people would be quicker to nc if they would be called guest123 or newbie345 instead of user5432118990.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 11/09/2016 19:54

I now just ignore the user thingie.

I'm still upset because I spent hours working out how someone can have 7 children and be 19 years old. Well, they were two digits away.
Just choose a fucking name FGS.

FlissMumsnet · 12/09/2016 20:44

Everyone loves a good username Smile Keep em coming!

Just call them starters. As they're not established users as such. They could be called learners, or something that makes its clear how new an inexperienced on MN they are, and the regulars can make allowances for them. Maybe they will have to have made fifty posts or something to be able to change up their user name?

I think something obvious like that that once regular they wouldn't want to be. Then make user and nunber combinations unacceptable.

There seem to be more and more of them and it does feel like a hiding behind and not a real poster. I hadn't known they were new, so it doesn't work.

Its helpful for all to know the learners to the site.
