I'm not sure I know where to start with this. Do we seriously need trigger warnings on threads with stuff that's nice to look at? Should we also include a trigger warning that there are pictures of donkeys, apples, bowls and guinea pigs?

I'm sorry, and I'm sure someone will fucking complain about this thread but seriously. I very rarely get the arse about this ceaseless triggering shit, but I am this time.

I don't get the "triggering" thing. Click and if it's unexpectedly - or not - upsetting then click away.

And for what its worth it is an actual phobia, not the crumpet but the holes within them.

The phobia of holes thing is particularly pathetic.
There are holes in all sorts of things people happen upon daily. If a person can't function in life because they might feel a bit weird after seeing a picture if some holes well that's tough shit.

'Trigger' warnings should be for unusual stuff. Like abuse, bereavement,sexual assault.. You know, thanks that matter.

Trypophobia is real and very distressing. For me it causes a terrible surge of anxiety and disgust, I get waves of nausea and stress sometimes for hours afterwards depending on the picture. (Not crumpets ) I avoided that thread because I assumed it would have gross pictures on it but it's not just being 'scared of crumpets'

It has got totally out of hand. It's like "lighthearted" though. People are scared not to write it incase some smugger mcsmuggerson comes and gives them a row.

Also sometimes the tread titles are like "vague mumble mumble WARNING TRIGGER!!!" meaning you have no idea what the possible upset may be anyway.

Yes, exactly. Threads about rape and child abuse, fine, mark them as triggering for a valid reason. Threads which might contain things with effing holes in them is nothing short of absurd.

Saggy- have you read that page? It basically says that thousands of people on the internet say they have this phobia but that psychiatrists don't think it is a phobia.

A lot of people also dismiss misophonia, tell sufferers to stop being silly, blah blah blah.
Its no less real.

Few years ago depression was treated with electro shock therapy, we know better now.

There are threads on here every fucking day about various shades of domestic violence which are arguably triggering. Yet those are not marked (and neither should they be) but people get their knickers in a twist about a HOLE in a crumpet. FGS.

It is ridiculous! Everything is a bloody trigger lately. IMO the trigger warnings should revert to being used solely for those threads that may be triggering (i.e. rape, abortion, abuse).

I remember when MNHQ used to reply to ridiculous reports with a response along the lines of "suck it up". What happened to that?

It's not pathetic. It's a genuine phobia and it's really quite common.

A trigger warning might not be the best thing - more a content note, perhaps - just something to give a heads up as to something in the thread that could cause upset.

I suppose the issue is that people don't understand trigger warnings and how they should be used. I've seen posts (not necessarily on MN, but elsewhere) where the subject will literally just say "trigger" - well, that helps nobody, how are you supposed to know if it's something you need to avoid?

I don't give a crap if psychiatrists think it's not real! I've experienced it since I was a child and it's horrible.

Is a photo of a crumpet on the thread? I'm not bothered by crumpets but those lotus flower things are the stuff of nightmares.

Maybe phobia alert would be a better phrase than trigger warning?

Trigger warnings are for ptsd not bloody phobias. You can be phobic of anything (and in fact, can have ptsd over anything)

Oh and electroshock therapy is still used - it does actually work on some treatment resistant depression. "We know better now" is not entirely accurate. Like writing "trigger warning" because of a phobia, for example...

MNHQ had to put a triggering warning on my thread about the grass snake in my garden because someone said they dropped the ipad when they saw it and it broke and their DH shouted at them.

I think there is a massive misuse of the term phobia.
A genuine phobia is a dreadful and debilitating mental condition.

Finding little holes a bit creepy is not a fucking phobia. It belittles people who do have a genuine phobia.

It's like when people say they are allergic when they are actually intolerant. It makes people take life threatening allergies less seriously.

And don't get me fucking started on 'a little bit OCD'.

Plus it's completely pointless anyway, as if you have ptsd just the word can trigger you. So by the time you read "trigger warning - this post has a fucking crumpet in it" you're already set off by reading the word crumpet.

beyond that's a good point. Literally every thread could contain something someone somewhere has a phobia of.

The ones on threads about snakes, spiders and bugs particularly annoy me. It just plays up to the squealing, hand flapping hysteria which means a thread just gets filled up with people expressing their discust in increasingly elaborate ways.

My PTSD diagnosis following a public serious assault meant I underwent a year of therapy so intense I contemplated suicide weekly. If anyone feels that way about holes fair enough,but the trigger warning were supposed to stop people in that situation from being thrown over the edge.
It would be impossible to warn everyone of everything someone might find offensive.

I once snorted a skittle up my nose by accident and it hurt a tiny bit. I will not die happy until every single individual skittle in existence has a tiny trigger warning printed on its Arse.
