Why is Mumsnet insisting that I log in?

CrispEater · 17/08/2016 09:58

I spend quite a lot of time browsing Mumsnet on my Samsung tablet, not logged in. I rarely post anything but if I do, I do that on my PC because I can type quicker on a proper keyboard.
Just now I was in Mumsnet on the tablet and kept getting a pop-up that insists I should either log in or join. As far as I can see, there is no way of getting rid of this pop-up except by logging in or joining or giving up on Mumsnet. It looks very genuine to me.
I really can't be bothered to keep logging in when I only want to browse and I hate being forced into doing something I'd rather not do.
Is there some reason why Mumsnet now wants everyone logged in all the time? Or have I missed something?

This is so frustrating. The pop-up box keeps popping up on my mobile, I log-in and then a few minutes later it pops-up again! And bounces me out of the Talk section. Hopeless. Has made the site almost impossible to use today.

CiaoVerona · 18/08/2016 00:09

You can stop the forced log in by deleting the code without having to log in.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 18/08/2016 00:15

Facebook, MN, whatever...!

Why is Mumsnet insisting that I log in?
DPotter · 18/08/2016 00:17

I have just re-logged in, to say that milliseconds after I logged out to close down the website before bed, the log in box bounced in ! If this is the state of play from now on, I will be off, which wont help your focused advertising at all. Grrrrrrr!

user1471474800 · 18/08/2016 00:42

sadly cannot lurk as I used to, due to your new need to log in, you refused to accept my email as valid, what is it you hope to achieve? Will this stop trolls or goady fuckers? I think not, I will just stop reading, taking advice...

ChrisPNuts · 18/08/2016 00:52

I agree with almost all the posts on this thread & I very much agree that this particular test is really annoying,I hope it ends soon!!

I hope I don't get flamed for this, but I am trying to look at it from all sides ,I've lost count of the times I've read "this isn't good enough HQ"
All of us have our quibbles,we all have suggestions in regards to what would improve the site,so how would things improve if they aren't trialled first?

I am glad that the site isn't stagnant & that we get to try different ways of using it ,we all have the opportunity to give feedback, isn't that a good thing?

I do wonder suspicious if this is also in some way a means of testing how to keep track of the trolling & nastiness on the site?
We all know it's beyond a joke at the moment !!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 18/08/2016 01:55

But to troll and be nasty you already need to log in. It's those of us who have no wish to troll or be nasty, or indeed comment in any way, who are affected. If someone wants to be a goady fucker they will go to the extra effort of signing in, it's how they get their kicks.

For those of us who would rather not leave our devices signed in for all and sundry to see, it is just a massive unnecessary ball ache.

Atlas15 · 18/08/2016 02:00

It's annoying sometimes I just want to check updates on certain post 😑

Atlas15 · 18/08/2016 02:03

You should add a little x in the corner so we click off of it like a cookies warning

ChrisPNuts · 18/08/2016 02:25

I agree wholeheartedly MarkR,but I still wonder if with the tech being trialled might give HQ a little more information than they get at the moment.
If it's following the info that genuine users access then it's doing the same for the trolls & GF... Every little helps!

JoyceDivision · 18/08/2016 03:37

Crap. I don't want to.log in all the time, I want to browse. If this isgoing ahead that's me off mumsnet I'm afraid.

I logged in to voice my comments snd after logging in the pop up box came up telling me to log in!!

Awful idea HQ, irritating and since you'rewanting people to log in every time theycome to the site so securmity is being used a lot more, esp on shared work place systems or public spaces eg transport, cafe etvc is that not causing security to be more open to compromise?

Awful idea please get rid of it.

JoyceDivision · 18/08/2016 03:40

Please confirm when you're dropping this mumsnet hq as no.onesupports it on this thread and the explanation you gave soinds like it's from some oneoff a marketing course.

MapleandPear · 18/08/2016 04:00

The thing is, a lot of this personalisation technology is a blunt instrument at the moment at predicting what users may be interested in. As anyone knows who has been followed round the internet by ads for a dress they just bought.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 18/08/2016 06:59

Another one just logging in to give feed back: it's a pain in the arse and I won't be using mumsnet on my phone from now on which is a massive amount.

Suppose i'll just have to play Alphabetty instead.

heknowsmysinsheseesmysoul · 18/08/2016 07:41

Please remove the forced log - in.

Squirtlelover · 18/08/2016 07:48

This is my first post. I'm a longtime lurker but never post. I really enjoy the site but don't want to be forced to log in to access content. This is a terrible idea!Angry

Sniv · 18/08/2016 07:50

Unless I've seen something I really, really want to post on in the few pages I've browsed before it appears, I'll often just go to another site. I hate having control of my browsing yanked away from me and logging in is a faff (especially since the change where I can no longer log in with my short, four character name, but have to use a massive long email address which I can never remember if it's .com or .co.uk because I log in infrequently and have both...).

sentia · 18/08/2016 07:58

I don't want my content customised. I read Mumsnet to understand my fellow human beings better, with a side order of practical advice. I don't want to know about things I already know eg things I read yesterday.

If you're serious about serving up site content that aligns to browsing history then:

  • Better to make it user driven, eg let me rank the topics in Talk that I'm most interested in in order. Browsing history by talk topic would be useful data to help me choose, but I want to choose
  • If you insist on having content tailoring algorithms, is your tech team is diverse? There are researched and proven problems with this - people have been shown to code their bias into search tools. So if the demographic spread of your tech team matches the site's users you might be ok (although having spent my whole career in IT I think this is unlikely!).
  • Will any tailoring algorithms build in an element of randomness, per the comment upthread on "bubbles"?
  • Will your tech team remember that lives move on? I'm still getting Google and Amazon tailored content about newborn baby crap and DD is nearly 3.

Also, I have ad blocker software. I strongly recommend it to anyone else as annoyed by this as I am!

loosechange · 18/08/2016 08:00

I don't get a metered log in at all now. I can't even scroll down the list of active conversations without the box appearing.

Enidblyton1 · 18/08/2016 08:02

Please can you remove the forced log in Mumsnet!
Or could you set it to pop up only after somebody has been on the site for say, 15 minutes?
I often come on to browse for 10-15 mins when I'm waiting for something. A couple of times recently I haven't bothered because I hate signing in unless I want to comment. This will definitely lower my usage of Mumsnet

sentia · 18/08/2016 08:02

I found if you delete cookies / browsing history it resets the 10 pages. So it depends if you can be bothered with the faff.

CrepeDeChineWag · 18/08/2016 08:02

Really fucking annoying

zen1 · 18/08/2016 08:04

I don't like it either. I thought it was a bug in my device when I came on here today. I like to browse (and don't want a tailored experience) and only log-in to post. I often just come on here quickly to check things and find being forced to log-in off-putting.

665TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 18/08/2016 08:06

I also think a short test will not give you the data you expect. People who are currently invested in threads will continue to visit. Logging in for a while and putting up with the petty irritation, but will not persist ..
And as for the personalised experience / inconvenience..erm..just how many of us are using ad blockers do you think..or would actually knowing the answer to that question be a bit problematic?

AverysillyoldHector · 18/08/2016 08:09

Even Facebook has a 'not now' option when it tries to force you to log in. As for 'personalised content' I assume that means adverts as the only other stuff I can see includes:

Ovulation calculator
Due date calculator
Baby name finder icon

None of which are remotely relevant to me..... MNHQ I use adblocker so if you want to make your site relevant to me, dont bother with the adverts when I log in Grin
