Is there anything you can do to help abused women?

A thread has caused me to think that something needs to change for women who are suffering domestic abuse.

At the moment there is not enough support. Some have to go into hiding and are essentially cut off from the world.

Unable to register, unable to vote, unable to gain credit or even claim certain benefits.

This is disgusting. Why are women being let down in society and their abusers are getting away with it?

On top of this, many refuges are closing down to lack of funding. Is there anything MNHQ can do to help?

Your website is a beacon for women. It provides a lot of support and advice to those seeking it. You could potentially be a very powerful voice to the public

I haven't looked at the application forms so I don't know what's required this year but from experience, that's not a whole load of time left.

I hope that Scottish MNers in the field are reading this thread.

Thanks very much for this - we’re keeping an eye on this thread and mulling options.

We’re really glad to lend our support to organisations and campaigns which offer help to abused women. Your unwavering support for those who need help on the boards does not go unnoticed - so our default position at MNHQ is that we are extremely willing to highlight campaign actions.

We try to be as useful as possible, so we work with charities in various ways. We’ve worked with Women’s Aid before, including a webchat to feature their ‘Saving Survivors’ Services’ campaign, a guest post from a Survivor Ambassador and a guest post from a survivor at the launch of their Child First campaign. You also raised over £5,000 for them in 2014’s Giving Week.

Rape Crisis featured in our 2015 Giving Week, and you raised over £3,000 for them.

Other quicker, simpler things we do include support on social media, guest campaigns and stickying threads to raise awareness of petitions or appeals (we highlight the Refuge Christmas appeal every year).

We hope this explains our reasoning and actions to date; but as I said, we are reading this thread and really happy to see the impetus here. We’re going over what we’ve done before and renewing our efforts to think of something eye-catching and constructive. As ever, we’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks Bojana. Might there be some ......flexibility in this year's nominations for Giving Week if there is enough support for it ? (IE - not necessarily ruling out organisations which might have figured in previous years?)

Just adding my support to this. I am really shocked by so many stories and then how isolated women can be afterwards.

I would really support this; I left DV and know very well the horror of it. MN played a key role in getting me out too.

Just thought I would give the thread a little bump in case anyone else wants to add support or has any ideas.
