Is there anything you can do to help abused women?

NeedACleverNN · 11/08/2016 20:07

A thread has caused me to think that something needs to change for women who are suffering domestic abuse.

At the moment there is not enough support. Some have to go into hiding and are essentially cut off from the world.

Unable to register, unable to vote, unable to gain credit or even claim certain benefits.

This is disgusting. Why are women being let down in society and their abusers are getting away with it?

On top of this, many refuges are closing down to lack of funding. Is there anything MNHQ can do to help?

Your website is a beacon for women. It provides a lot of support and advice to those seeking it. You could potentially be a very powerful voice to the public

Agree!

smilingeyes11 · 13/08/2016 23:29

I'm in too. I love the idea of making up boxes to be donated regularly. Could easily and gladly do that.

Tigerpaws57 · 14/08/2016 07:22

Very worthy cause

Fingerbobs · 14/08/2016 07:49

Absolutely agree.

ElodieS · 14/08/2016 11:18

Adding support, this would be a really valuable area for MN to campaign in.

needanivoftea · 14/08/2016 12:10

Agreed

EatDickShrek · 14/08/2016 17:12

Agreed 100%!

GreenGoth89 · 14/08/2016 17:22

I know me and friends are trying to raise funds for our local crisis centre as we know 4 people currently using their services that are personal friends or family. I don't know what's the best way to do it though, something sort related, something creative, mini festivals with local bands up and down the country. I'd love to get into events management so if I can lend a hand anywhere then please let me know!

GreenGoth89 · 14/08/2016 17:27

Can I just add that we need to not forget that there are plenty of men who are experiencing DV and being isolated further by the stigma of it and that there are fewer services which will help them out compared to women.

MotherFuckingChainsaw · 14/08/2016 17:31

Agreed

It's a bloody disgrace that there isn't organised support for those fleeing intolerable situations. We need to make a fuss.

And thanks for the link above, I have a load of generic schools uniform stuff and baby things I want to donate, but have room to store till needed. I'd love to donate those to a refuge and make a difference.

DawnMumsnet · 14/08/2016 17:34

Hi folks,

Just stopping by to say we're not ignoring you! We've flagged this thread to our Campaigns team and we're sure they'll be along soon to say if there's anything we can do here.

Thanks very much for raising this with us. Flowers

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 14/08/2016 17:39

Agreed as well!

Noonesfool · 14/08/2016 17:45

what a brilliant idea thanks for raising this OP

cozietoesie · 14/08/2016 21:46

Thanks, Dawn.

SciFiFan2015 · 14/08/2016 22:11

Agreed. Looking forward to finding out more on MN actions.
For anyone living in Scotland please sign post constituted groups that support women to The Women's Fund for Scotland. It's a grant making organisation that supports Moving on from Violence as one of it's investment themes.
It also needs donations to keep making grants

Nae cheek, nae chance...

cozietoesie · 14/08/2016 22:44

Nae cheek, nae chance, indeed. Smile (My autocorrect has just had apoplexy! Grin)

I think they have a grant application deadline of 28th September this year?

magimedi · 14/08/2016 23:03

Totally with this idea.

MrsHathaway · 15/08/2016 10:31

I learned this morning that a dear friend was thrown down the stairs by her "D"H (now fully recovered and has a SHL) and we agreed that there's an awful lot of it about.

There's a greater national consciousness that abusive behaviour is actually unacceptable and that you're allowed to leave. We should do anything and everything we can to continue the momentum and give women* options.

  • Men can also be victims of DA but the statistics show that (a) this is frequently in all-male partnerships and (b) in far smaller numbers than women. Safe spaces for women are hugely important and should be supported and funded completely independently of safe spaces for men.
SciFiFan2015 · 15/08/2016 10:45

Cozietosie - they do indeed have a deadline of 28 September and if anyone was thinking of applying the website is easy to find.
I believe they need more small grant applications!
