I'm not the most tech savvy person, can anyone help please?

Last night I was posting on Mumsnet and an advert for a sex chat site appeared out of nowhere which had a close up video of a woman using a vibrator on herself that completely filled the screen Angry.

How did I inadvertently do this? It was on the Louise Mensch thread, I followed a link to the tweet and read it, then went back to post my message. I think when I hit post is when the porn appeared but I can't be entirely sure. I couldn't work out how to get it to stop either for a minute, or how to close the page.

I don't want porn on my phone ffs! What can I do?

I haven't downloaded any new apps recently and I don't get these sort of pop ups on any other website!

HopeArden · 20/07/2016 10:46

If I have to do a factory reset I am leaving this site because it is becomming more trouble than it's worth. I too am not a pokemon user and havent added any apps. I mostly just live here!

RachelGoldberg · 20/07/2016 10:48

What a rubbish answer. I havent downloaded anything lately and it only happened on mumsnet, not any of the other .. 24.. websites I have used my phone for in the last day.

MummyBtothree · 20/07/2016 10:48

'CM security' is a good security app to download for free. I was getting porn etc popping up and I run the virus scan on this app now every day. The first time it found 7 viruses on my android phone and it solved them immediately. It also lets you block & report nuisance calls

Cadsuane · 20/07/2016 11:05

No pokemon here either. And no threats found. So far it has only happened on my tablet an its been ages since i downloaded anything.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/07/2016 11:10

Apparently some of the malware containing apps have a time delay on them so that they don't start the malware side for a few weeks after installation to make it harder to ID them.

It is possible it is malware, it is also possible that it is rogue ads on MN - the nature of the problem makes it very hard to track down - if people can definitively say that it is not there phone that is the problem, that can help.

AYD2MITalkTalk · 20/07/2016 11:12

Downloaded AVG and ran, just for fun. It discovered the shocking facts that I've copied things to my clipboard and that I allow sideloading.

On the plus side, as another poster pointed out, it doesn't seem to be happening at the moment, but that doesn't mean the problem doesn't need to be dealt with.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/07/2016 11:16

I have AGV already on my phone- all clear.

BishopBrennansArse · 20/07/2016 11:17

I'm staying in the app for safety. But tech - someone up there was using safari browser on iPhone. I really think you might be barking up the wrong tree...

AYD2MITalkTalk · 20/07/2016 11:17

Very true that it could be malware - very few are immune to the threat. But… I dunno. This doesn't feel like a user malware problem, unless it's very specifically a problem on MN in combination with malware installed on our phones, since nobody's mentioned having problems elsewhere.

danielbtech · 20/07/2016 11:20

Hi all,

Thanks for all of the feedback.

For all those who have checked their devices anti-virus and are still seeing porn ads this morning we are still busy looking into what is causing the issue, we will have further information for you later today.

Thanks Smile

AYD2MITalkTalk · 20/07/2016 11:23

I had the the most appalling problems once with malicious software on a covermount disc from a well-known magazine. Had to use a Linux boot disc and furtle around a hell of a lot with a multistage process involving several tools to solve the problem. I fondly (well, not that fondly) remember a time before hard drives, when all you had to do to get rid of a virus was take out the disc and reboot.

Igneococcus · 20/07/2016 11:35

Happened to me yesterday, android phone, downloaded Pokemon Go for ds the day before but from Play Store which I assume would offer the right version. I have AVG but it couldn't find anything. I disabled Chrome and use USC browser now, seems OK so far.

MachiKoro · 20/07/2016 11:58

That's a pretty patronising response, Daniel!
I run no apps other than chrome on my phone. None whatsoever.
I reported a number of weeks ago that the download ssizes for MN pages were becoming ridiculous, and I was burning through my data allowance, making MN away from home impossible. It sounds to me as if you have some v leaky code somewhere.
The only positive is that when it's unsuitable material, at least it gets reported more, as users notice it.

Queenbean · 20/07/2016 12:11

It's happened to me too, not on android, not using Pokemon.

Only ever happens on MN.

I think the problem is you, not me....

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 20/07/2016 12:19

iPhone here as well.

no apps downloaded recently.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 20/07/2016 12:20

Yes, Safari on iPhone, here, so that's the android theory out of the window.

Sooverthis · 20/07/2016 12:34

Kindle fire here

Voddy4 · 20/07/2016 12:47

I had this problem last night.i am in Android but no new apps and no pokemon go here either

NatashaRomanov · 20/07/2016 13:06

And again.
AIBU thread- WWYD car parkd on drive.

Clicked through to next page (page 3 or 4), put phone down for a minute. Come back and there's a page for 'local ladies'.

I love mumsnet, but this is ridiculous.

PortiaCastis · 20/07/2016 13:55

Hi Techie. Avast has picked up the following as malware while I was reading the Calais thread
http:/trk.kwfkt.com/ 1c4dec99-4de7-97c5-5oce3be324af?rzd
HTH
Please dont click on this everyone it's malware

OorWullie1936 · 20/07/2016 14:02

Happening to me too over last 2 days. I don't click on anything just open a thread and I get the porn or free iPhone spinning wheel. Last happened a few minutes ago before I came to site stuff to see if it had been reported. Not happening on any other site I use apart from MN.

DiamondInTheRuff · 20/07/2016 14:10

I can barely send a text on my phone, never mind download pokemon go!

danielbtech · 20/07/2016 14:40

Here's some background info on these rogue ads and why we sometimes struggle to track them down - including details of how you might be able to help us in future, by downloading an app which grabs the info we need. Many thanks in advance if you are able to help - much appreciated as ever.

Why are Mumsnet showing me these annoying pop-up ads?
Mumsnet sell some of our advertising space directly to approved advertisers, but we also sell some through third-party partners. We do not sell pop-up ads ourselves - we know they are a really frustrating format. We have measures in place to prevent them being sold via third-party partners too, but rarely, unscrupulous parties manage to outwit the systems that are in place on most websites, including Mumsnet.

Why does it take so long to stop these adverts?
We work hard to stop these adverts as quickly as we can, but it’s difficult to work out where it’s coming from with only a screenshot or a URL; the fact that they are handled through a variety of third-party partners can also complicate things. Sometimes these adverts are only shown to users on specific mobile networks in specific cities within short bursts of time – again, this makes them hard for us to find.

Why can’t you find the advert from the URL?
You might have noticed on websites such as Twitter or Facebook that the link you click on is completely different to the page you are directed to. For example: t.co/sWSLYXccEv takes you to a Mumsnet books page. This is the same for online advertising – sometimes the page you land on is different to the URL we are told is serving. Whilst the final URL can be useful, we often need more information to track down the issue quickly.

How can I help Mumsnet stop these ads?
To help us stop these ads we need as much information from you as possible. This includes the phone type you were using, the browser or app, your mobile network provider, your location, time of day and - most importantly - the ‘ad calls’.

What are ad calls?
Ad calls are a piece of code that are loaded onto a page to request an advert to appear. Ad calls can pass from one party to another and sometimes one ad trigger several ad calls before an ad appears - we will often need to know the full chain of events to help us identify the guilty party.

How can I capture ad calls?
There is a free app on the Apple App Store called HTTP Watch that can help you easily capture all this information which you can then send onto us. It functions exactly like a normal web browser – but also captures every ad call and ad response that occur while you browse.

Will HTTP Watch record any private information such as login details?
No, your personal data is not captured. All that is captured are the various requests and responses that the page you are browsing makes - such as requests to third-parties to return adverts on the page.

How to use the HTTP Watch app

  1. If you are experiencing issues with adverts on your mobile device, go to the Apple App Store and download the free HTTP Watch Basic app.
  2. Once downloaded, open the app and type in the URL of the page where you last saw the bad ad
  3. If you do not see the bad ad, tap on the spanner icon at the bottom of the screen and tap ‘Clear Log’. If you don’t do this, the file may become too large to use.
  4. Refresh the page or go to another page to see if the ad appears. If the ad does not appear then repeat step 3.
  5. Once you see the bad ad you need to tap on the icon that looks like three horizontal bars in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. This is where all the ad calls have been captured whilst you have been browsing.
  6. Now tap the icon in the top right of the screen that is three horizontal lines.
  7. Tap ‘Email’ and then send this whole file to [email protected] , explaining what you saw with as much detail as you can.

Thanks again for your patience and help with this – it’s much appreciated.
