Numbering Posts.

Just that really.

Would it be possible to number posts?

Threads, particularly long or fast moving ones, sometimes descend into chaos with posters replying to someone who they think will be the post above them when by the time they've posted the point they were replying to several, sometimes, a page, back!

It would be great to be able to begin: response to post 123.

Do you think this could be done?

Ps. I have just read a thread that is 11 pages long. There is a comment on page 3 that I would like to specifically respond to.

I'm not going to because if I make my response, lots of people are not going to know what I'm responding to and think . If I address this poster my name, that won't make any difference either as the poster has made several comments.

How much easier to begin in response to POST 123 and then others will know I am not going off on one randomly and it won't take them ages to find the post that I'm responding to.

Well, after 11 pages, there's a good chance that someone's already said what you're going to say. And it's really unlikely that people will flip back to see what number post you're in about anyhow.

And MN is a site where people use words, not short cuts. So if you really have spotted a point that has not already been made from way back, you can always incorporate it in your text (along the line of 'I want to pick up on what louis said earlier about aspect X') which is much clearer than a back reference.

But if Lous has already made several points, it would lead to re-capping a lot of what she had said in that particular post before responding.

People could do that though if they'd rather but I think numbered posts would be another option and what harm would it do?

No, no-one else has thought of the brilliant point that I want to make in all 11 pages but if I make it now on page 12, I'll look a bit daft, as a lot of people won't recall the post I'm responding to and some won't even have RTFT! My brilliance will fall flat!
