My customise options don't let me hide the social media buttons

Like most people (as far as I can tell), I hate the social media buttons at the bottom of each thread. I used to have them hidden but my Customise options seem to have shrunk right down and I don't have the choice anymore. How can I make them go away??

Well, I MN from my phone and I'm always logged into FB and Twitter. I don't want the hassle of logging in and out all the time. It is really easy to accidentally hit the social media buttons, particularly if phone freezes for a second or scrolls slower than usual. If I then compound that mistake by accidentally hitting 'yes' to sharing the thread, then I've suddenly posted a thread I've been reading or posting on to my friends and family. Now, what if that thread is a TTC one, for example? Or someone posting about their marriage problems or an intimate health issue? Something you definitely don't want to share with the world. Even if you were only reading it and not even posting, people are going to wonder why you've shared it and jump to some conclusions! It's potentially hugely embarrassing and if the thread is about something such as domestic violence or a hugely sensitive issue then it could be very harmful. We should have the option to hide the buttons to eliminate this possibility. By removing this option, it feels like MN are more interested in the potential for us to share threads, intentionally or otherwise, whatever the potential cost to us, just so they can get publicity for the site out there. Given the nature of this forum, the anonymity and the highly sensitive nature of what people sometimes post, this seems like a very cynical and callous strategy.

And the reason I de-regged a couple of weeks ago was fear of being outed. So to come back and find I've lost the privilege of being able to protect my identity in one way - it's very frustrating.

And I just find them plain irritating! Grin

cozietoesie · 22/04/2016 22:02

There's a constant tension. Tech want a plain, simple and elegant system, the Accountants and Sales and Marketing want a good bottom line and everybody needs to keep people using the site so they all have to make some concessions. (Plus a few other little wrinkles.Wink)

Ah, ok, got you. I don't have my phone set up like that so it's not a problem I can fully appreciate. I don't think I've even got the Mumsnet app (but I'm not sure Grin ).

cozietoesie · 23/04/2016 08:09

It would do no harm, I'm sure, if people were to check regularly to confirm the contents of their Customise. Smile

I'm only suggesting 'having a look', Maryz.

Not 'saving' anything. Grin

cozietoesie · 24/04/2016 08:01

Although I do think you should just bite the bullet on 'New'. It would arguably allow you to acclimatise in a more relaxed way than overnight when they (inevitably) call time on 'Classic'.

cozietoesie · 24/04/2016 09:23

Actually, MNHQ rather missed a trick there. They should have called it 'Old' or 'Original' when they brought in the 'New'.'Classic' makes it sound more prestigious than it really is. Wink

On a serious note - we will be discussing this at HQ. Many thanks for posting everyone.

Thanks, Becca. Smile

That actually sounds like a good compromise, Maryz. I'd be prepared to try to sell that one to Tech and the Security Consultants at least. Wink

Thanks, Becca!
