Trending - deleted threads in there since lunchtime

Two threads - married celeb and mystery celeb have been deleted but have been sat in trending since lunchtime.

I think that 'Trending' may be broken.

I was just thinking the same thing.

Isn't it to do with the fact that trending picks up the number of people who click on a thread? So it becomes self perpetuating, since more people click on threads in Trending, and I suspect that even more are clicking on the threads about the mystery celeb in the hope that someone has revealed who it is.

I noticed over the Easter weekend that the Discussions of the Day threads were outdated too and didn't change for days. Are these updated manually then?

MNHQ could not organise a piss up in a brewery - it is so very sad.

I suspect that advertising revenue is all they are after & the forum is just seen as an add on.

It would be sooo easy for them to fix (I'm a computer programmer). Pretty much just 'if thread is deleted then don't show it in trending.'
I've mentioned it before but nothing was done about it.
I think (though I don't know) discussions of the day is chosen manually - sort of an 'editors choice.'

They said that Tech update Trending every 5 minutes or so according to what's top in Google Analytics.

The biggest part of my job is using GA. Assuming that deleted threads must be distinguished in some way from active ones, it really shouldn't be that hard to put a filter in so that deleted threads automatically dropped out of the list. Why haven't Tech done it?

It seems particularly relevant given that 4 out of 5 of the threads currently in trending are deleted and, put together, they do sort of draw attention to what the deletions are trying to prevent.

This has been discussed before and nothing is done. It's a slightly bonkers situation.

It could actually be there for years as its in "trending" and anyone coming along will click on it to see what the gossip is, this will be repeated and repeated and repeated forever.....................

I came to site stuff specifically to see if this was annoying anyone else.

Tempted to keep starting speculative threads and see if we can completely block up trending with deleted threads which might spur tech into action.

But I won't. Because I'm not a rebel

I wonder if the formula for showing Trending threads is somehow programmed on what MNHQ see, and not us mere mortals. After all, I suspect 'deleted' threads aren't in fact deleted, just hidden from us.

when you google search to find out said info all the deleted mumsnet threads come up which probably get clicked on and making them trend again

We're really sorry that a number of zapped threads have been hanging around in the Trending box - we know how annoying that can be.

We do aim to exclude anything that's been deleted from Trending, but occasionally it seems that we don't hit the button hard enough.

We've asked our Tech team if they can sort it for us that anything that's deleted is automatically excluded. As Empress said, it shouldn't be impossible to put a filter in.

(But speaking as someone who needs my nine year old to help me with the Sky remote, I may not be the best person to judge how difficult it may be...)
