Anti-Religious Trolling On Mumsnet

I get that not everyone is religious and that some people are very anti-religious (some with good reasons).

But some MNetters are religious, others are simply curious. So how come so many threads are allowed to be derailed by anti-religious trolls? Today a thread about Good Friday was deleted because a troll came on. FFS, it's Easter! Threads about Islam are regularly derailed by Islamophobes. On a thread seeking information on Judaism in the Philosophy & Religion topic, a troll has posted LMFAO. Ok, serious question, why does the Jewish God make all men wear a funny beards? She continues venting for a few posts before eventually exiting the thread saying that she is on drugs because It's Easter, party time.

She is a MN regular, like most of the anti-religious trolls here. I have reported her posts but they still stand.

Trolls are not interested in knowing what other people think or believe. They have no desire to discuss the point of actual threads and rarely start threads of their own regarding their issues with religion or belief. They just derail threads in the hope of driving all talk of religion and different beliefs off MN. And they are succeeding.

Why are MNHQ allowing this to happen? Deleting threads instead of dealing with posters? Allowing blatant anti-religious trolling to derail threads that people may find supportive or informative? Is MN a religion free zone? Because if it is, that's ok. I just think that religious posters should be told. Then they can go elsewhere if they wish to discuss their beliefs.

I don't disagree that in various cases of perceiving things, particularly in children it makes sense to rule out a neurological cause. My own daughter does have experiences but there is nothing wrong with her that any doctor can find.

SurferJet · 26/03/2016 13:54

What you've experienced is extremely odd Ohfuckaducky - I've lived in London all my life & I've never come across anything like this. Spat on, verbal abuse, priests refusing to leave your place of work, bible quotes being left on your desk ( I think that's what you said? )

There is actually video on UTube of religious groups abusing and spitting on people entering abortion clinics.

Personally, I try not to judge all Christians by the standards of the most extreme and unpleasant. Sadly, the same doesn't seem to apply to Christians judging no believers. A couple of people might have been a bit rude on Mumsnet- and apparently it's a "free for all" - Christians are being constantly ridiculed and belittled and want to hide their threads.

capsium · 26/03/2016 14:31

People's bad experiences with some Christians in real life is not really what this thread is about though?

This thread is about people being able to talk about aspects of religious faith and belief, on a thread dedicated to the subject, without being constantly interrupted by people saying they disagree with the religion.

An analogy would some people, who have had bad experience with some particular medical professionals, constantly interrupting a thread full of medical professionals, saying they are all wrong and not to be trusted, when what is being discussed is a particular course of medical treatment - in terms of it being a derailment.

Conversely there are threads asking for the opinions of atheists. So it is in no way the case that people generally feel that atheists shouldn't post their views but that it should not be for the purpose to derail a thread

There is a theme on these threads for some rude poster to jump in with 'well what is the point - God doesn't exist'

capsium · 26/03/2016 14:41

I didn't read the full thread ducky but from the bit I remember reading you didn't need to comment on what other's said, just say what you'd be doing.

I've said before I don't disbelieve you regarding your experiences. It seems part and parcel of MN for people to get suspicious of people trolling, people have expressed disbelief about stuff I've said before. I try not to take this too personally, myself, otherwise I'd dwell on stuff too much.

lottielou7 · 26/03/2016 14:42

Usually on post 2 or 3 - let's shut this discussion down before it even starts.

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2016 14:49

So basically you are saying that only Evqngelical Christians should answer the question "Wha is your experience of Evangelical Churches?" even if others actually have valuable contributions to make? And only religious people should answer "How can I help religious dd" when it seems that the 6 year old concerned appears to being taught Creationism somewhere, and is being upset because dinosaurs don't fit into the world view she is being taught?

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2016 14:52

I could link to loads of threads where people post about their concerns about Christian influence on society, and Christians try to "shut down the debate" by saying "That's just how it is" "It's a Christian country" "Suck it up" or "why are you worried, nobody's trying to convert you"

lottielou7 · 26/03/2016 14:55

Nobody can tell someone what to post but there is a consistent theme on this board where a poster approaches a thread with the specific intention to vandalise and derail the thread.

It's about not being a twat and leaving a thread alone if you know you don't have anything useful to contribute. It's about respecting someone who clearly doesn't want to have a debate but is asking for ideas and starting your own thread if you want a debate.

I don't think there is anything unreasonable about that.

"Nobody can tell someone what to post but there is a consistent theme on this board where a poster approaches a thread with the specific intention to vandalise and derail the thread."

None of the threads you have linked to are even remotely like that. Have you read them?

lottielou7 · 26/03/2016 15:34

Yes I have read them. Amd it's being going on for years.

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2016 15:36

But that hasn't happened on the threads you've linked to- even if it does happen on others. Can you find one where it does and link to it? Because I don't really understand.

lottielou7 · 26/03/2016 15:38

Yes it does. And there are plenty more. I'm not going to argue the point any further. People can make up their own minds.

But I do hope that MNHQ does more to address the issue.

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2016 15:47

But you aren't arguing the point. You are making statements and not backing them up with any evidence.

Which on a thread where you are asking MNHQ to take action seems a little pointless. They will want evidence. The threads you have linked to do not support your case.
