Navbar update

Morning folks, and a happy 2016, one and all.

We will shortly be releasing a new version of the navbar across some areas of the site on desktop view.

The idea is to have something clearer and more streamlined and that is more in line with the mobile version (which is where the bulk of MN users are) and standard web formats. It also allows us to accommodate a larger ad format at the top of desktop site - which advertisers are demanding because that's what most other sites offer.

We've done a first round of testing on a with some users (many to them) and the response was largely positive, so we're now testing it on parts (talk, reviews) of the live site. The plan is to introduce it everywhere if all goes well.

This is very much a beta version; and we'll be continuing to make a few design tweaks to the nav bar as needed and to the rest of the desktop site to accommodate it (at the moment on Talk it looks a bit jarring for sure but we are working on improving that). We're also looking at way to fit in the angels logo at least at the top of the page (it will disappear as you scroll). So, they'll be a few more updates over the next few weeks...

Do post any thoughts, concerns, feedback here. (Bear in mind it's a work in progress and all change takes a little getting used to )

I miss the floaty bar too for 'active' and 'I'm on' -- it was my main way of navigating talk so it seems very odd without it.

I cant see the social media thing, maybe I have it switched off.

It's great that the menus with the annoying pictures have gone but I'll miss being able to go straight to active with the floaty bar.

I do have all my favourite topics in a favourites folder on firefox, but I liked the floaty thing and I definitely didn't install it, it just appeared.

I believe at one time it was called the "viewport bar". Is that right? If I get the name right can I have it back?

ARe you sure we're talking about the same thing when you say only 3% of people used "the floaty bar"?

I don't recall it being a thing that you turned on and opted in to. I thought it was a "default on" thing for people using MN New.

Is losing the ability to move from one board to another in 1 click really supposed to be an improvement?

Any chance of going back to the longer list of boards that was at the bottom of the page before the drop down menus?

It might look more streamlined, but it isn't really streamlined in terms of user experience.

That's the bar I am talking about Trills, I can't believe only 3% of people used it, it was so useful. I like the streamlining without drop downs at the top but it would be great if we could get the bar back.

Looks a tad bare for my liking. I understand the need to streamline (saving money obvs) but just too sterile.

I used to be able to find them via a drop down from 'Offers'

I don't think I know what the floaty bar is. I've always just scrolled back up.

Anyway, I hadn't actually noticed anything had changed until I read this thread but I like it. Nice and clean - especially with adblocker. And annoying pregnant woman gone = result.

I don't use the navbar at the top. Like, ever. If I hadn't been part of the test group I probably wouldn't have noticed it now.

But I DO NOTICE my viewport bar being gone.

I started a thread praising it, not 9 months ago!
