Extended hours for CBBC - what do you think?

BBC Trust has approved plans to extend the hours of CBBC by two hours, to 9pm.

During the BBC Trust’s consultation, respondents were divided on this proposed extension of CBBC’s hours. Those in favour of the extended hours said that it would fill a gap in provision for older children but others were concerned about children watching too much television. Some said that the BBC is over-providing for children while under-providing for those aged 16-34.

We’d love to know what you think about this - are you happy about the extended hours? Do you agree that the BBC is over-providing for children?

I don't see the need for it at all considering that everything is on iPlayer if they want to watch past 7pm.

Better the Beeb with their higher quality programming and lack of adverts than some of the other kids' channels.

Agree. I think 9 pm is also very late for their target audience. I like that it's finished at 7 pm.

What age is CBBC targeted at?
It would be nice of the later 2 hours were scheduled with new programmes better suited to older children.
However, it will probably be filled with more endless repeats of bloody Tracey Beaker.
My kids hardly ever watch CBBC live, but watch their pick of programmes on iPlayer.
On the other hand it would be nice of there were more family-friendly programmes for that time slot on the main BBC channels where everyone could watch something together.

Extended hours would be great

It would be nice to have some suitable and acceptable evening viewing for my almost 12 year old. I'm beginning to grow tired of endless re-runs of Pointless, the Chase and Police Interceptors. Endless re-runs of Wolf Blood and Young Dracula would at least mix it up a little.

Surely 16-34 is bbc3 territory? The one they are scrapping.
Extending cbbc by 2 hours is not going to fill that gap. I like that it finishes at 7, for the age group it's a good time to stop. I can't imagine 16 year olds would watch cbbc at 6pm or 9pm

I do agree that there's a lack of provision for the 16+ age group but see no issue with CBBC staying on later. There seems to be an awful lot of parents interested in a 7.30 bedtime but I've never really been one of them.

I don't really think it matters. My dc 8 and almost 10 watch cbbc.

They don't watch it as it live, they watch it on demand.

I don't think it's necessary to extend it to 9pm tbh.

I'm annoyed they're getting rid of BBC3 and would have loved a BBC1 +1.

Could've done with it when we arrived on holiday to settle the boys down a bit while we got everything straight before bedtime. I don't see the harm, its better than the crap on Pop and nick Jr.

Just because its on till 9pm doesn't mean they have to watch it till 9pm, It could be on 24hrs. It's up to the parents to limit the hours spent watching TV, not rely on the channels.

Are we talking CBBC or Cbeebies or both? I think 7pm is probably okay for cbeebies -CBBC would make sense to go through to 9pm as I don't think all 8/9 plus are going to bed at 7pm. My older dc's enjoy watching things such as Junior bake off on CBBC -I would much prefer that than some of the Disney channel rubbish that is on at that time.

I respectfully request, on behalf of DD2, that CBeebies start before 6am if you please. DH and I are sick of the preview reel.

My children watch everything on iplayer, so unless different content would be created, it wouldn't make any difference.

I better record the 'time has come to say goodnight' song they play at 7pm then because DS responds to that like Pavlovs dog, sudden tiredness and ready for bedtime story and sleep! But I agree that it could be 24 hours and people have the ability to control their own TVs and turn it off!

Cbbc doesn't have a bedtime hour like cbeebies

My just watch the programmes they like on catch up, the tell us off at 7 and up to bed regardless (that's if they can wrestle the remote from their dad and the news between 6-7! I don't think I watched cbbc at 16 (think I was in the pub?!) probably watched mainstream programmes from teenage yrs onwards.

Great idea, if you don't want to watch it, just switch off the TV.

There are some occasions when a kid might be happy to snuggle in front of the tv (feeling unwell, but can't sleep), coming back from holiday, parents having a crisis. It's great to give the choice to parents, go for it.

No need for it. A couple of hours a day is all that is needed really, particularly when iplayer is so accessible. Bring back the Broom Cupboard!

I know it's not a case of either/or but I would have preferred bbc1+1 to an extra 2 hours of CBBC

Not all of us are able to watch things on line/ I-player/u tube.....

maybe not to 9 though, maybe 8pm.

To be honest bbc3 would of been better to be kept for the 16+ age group.
