So I have been watching a programme on box set and when it started on TV I stopped going on any websites that may give it away before I watch it. Only for me to see a spoiler in active thread as a title.

Have some consideration for other people please - there are plenty of threads on the programme that do not have spoilers in then title.

So cheers to whoever started the thread - I don't know who as am not opening it.

don't know how this can be stopped from happening again. Just wanted to vent really

BTW, I am NOT saying the OP of the original thread should have got a hard time (I didn't read it) - she obviously just didn't think. I just don't think this OP is being unreasonable to be a bit disappointed (to put it at its highest).

It isn't beyond most people's wit to remember not to put spoilers in the title.

If you're feeling extra nice you could put SPOILERS WITHIN as well.

The OP apologised. It was a mistake. A stupid one, but I imagine she won't do it again.

Series rarely get spoiled for me because I get advance previews. That's privileged, isn't it Wink

Perhaps I should talk about them in advance of the air date? After all, I've seen them along with many other people and we'd love to talk. It's exactly what happened last week over the Walking Dead. We managed to stick to PMs.

is there another place the spoiler came out? Ruddy home page of Guardian broke the news about a major spoiler in a show that hadn't aired in the UK. It then creates open season for people to think fans of the show know.

I agree that if something's only just been on, it's not right to put a spoiler in the title. When you said "Box set" I thought it might be something that was on years ago.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 27/10/2015 10:32

I think if you post on a public forum, you should have good manners about etiquette.

I said this on the deleted thread but I don't have a problem with spiders, I quite like them. I wouldn't start a thread and not signpost it properly and then just post pictures of enormous spiders. Because it's unfair and thoughtless. My opinion might be that spiders are fab, doesn't mean that I can't open my mind a little bit to accept other people are different.

I'm afraid 'well watch it when it airs' doesn't work. It only aired last night. People will have been at work or don't have that channel so have to wait to watch it today online (like DH) or were ill or busy and need to watch it the following day. Nobody is saying don't talk about. It is courtesy to recognise that quite reasonably other people have been watching this programme for years and 12 hours after it has aired on a channel a lot of people don't have or haven't watched yet because they've been asleep for 9 of those 12 hours, is absolutely not the time to put the relevant spoiler in a thread title.

I don't watch the programme and couldn't care less whether Sheila's left leg fell off due to zombie rot but I am a nice person, I have manners and courtesy and I'm bright enough to realise that other people might not have seen something which aired last night and it's within my power not to ruin years of enjoyment with my own need to type whatever the fuck I like online.

Usual, I don't normally pull people up on their opinion but that's a bit harsh, maybe the OP was at work when it aired or tending a sick child all night. It's not unreasonable to expect the word spoiler in the title and 12 hrs is quite quick. Having said that I've never watched it although there are old series that im only just trying to catch up on that i avoid reading about.

do people really worry about this kind of stuff?

I've seen dozens of spoilers hell American stuff especially is aired before its available in the UK so Facebook gives it away long befire it even hits.

MumOnTheRunAgain · 27/10/2015 10:36

Sorry but if you 'don't have the channel' then I don't agree the whole world should wait for you to watch it by another ( legal I hope) means

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 27/10/2015 10:36

"A spoiler is an element of a disseminated summary or description of any piece of fiction that reveals any plot elements which threaten to give away important details concerning the turn of events of a dramatic episode."

It's not temporal, it's personal.

The question is, when is it acceptable to put it in a thread title. Well, you have a choice. You can decide that there might be people out there who you cause a little bit of mild unhappiness to and choose not to be that person or you can cling to your own pedantry and say fuck it, I'll do what I like.

You can't claim that you are 'right' to do it your way. Just that once you know the effect of what you're doing, you know you have a choice. What you choose to do and how you defend it, says everything about how you interact with your fellow human beings.

I, personally, think it's nice not to knowingly ruin something for somebody else. You can still talk about it, you can still post. You just have to be considerate. It's fine if you don't want to but the choice is clear.

The definition of spoiler is not a defence against wittingly upsetting people.

MumOnTheRunAgain · 27/10/2015 10:38

lexi and newsagents.... And other people.... You could get a spoiler at any given time! On the other thread a poster said her DH avoids newsagents till he's seen the episode in case spoilers are on newspapers or magazine covers!

Mumontherun, nobody is saying the whole world should wait. Those people who don't have the channel will probably watch it today. They will avoid social media, the radio and the newsagents (that's what DH is doing right now in fact). They don't expect the world to stop, just that people who have the power to be a bit considerate on a forum like MN, do so.

It's quite clear from this thread that plenty of people prefer it if 12 hours after something has aired, you don't stick revealing info in a title. You might not be bothered by people doing it, but when it's clear that a lot of people disagree, how difficult is it to exist peaceably alongside them and simply, not do it.

I'm not bothered by spoilers in the slightest. I don't care. In fact, I actively seek them out. However, I'm a nice person (in this respect anyway) and so I'd put the information behind a spoiler warning on MN.

My opinion doesn't trump somebody else's opinion and it's no problem for me not to write spoilers in thread titles. I don't need to do that. It's not a human right people are curtailing. It's a polite request.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 27/10/2015 10:43

usual, who has said it was okay to upset the op of that thread?

Of course it's not okay.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 27/10/2015 10:43

I think this is the first time on MN I've wanted to tell someone to get a fucking life.

Do you realise how pathetic you sound OP?

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 27/10/2015 10:45

The angry faces were a reaction to the spoiler, not to the op. People were upset, disappointed and cross that they'd no longer be able to enjoy that moment themselves. It was a knee jerk reaction. I'm not saying people weren't fooking rude, some were but the Angry faces didn't all come from that malicious place.

Some people do invest time and energy in their favourite programmes and they're really disappointed to see it spoiled in this way. I'm not one of them, but I'm not about to pull apart their way of doing things just so my way of doing things can reign.

If people are disappointed, upset and wrist slashy over a fucking television programme, to the extent that they need to rip and OP to shreds who didn't even post a fucking spoiler but started a thread discussing it AFTER it had been on, then they need help. Seriously. That is not normal.

limitedperiodonly · 27/10/2015 10:50

this is the first time on MN I've wanted to tell someone to get a fucking life.

Really? That happens frequently to me. I've managed to avoid it so far but sometimes it's been touch and go...

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 27/10/2015 10:54

I think we're all agreed that personal attacks are not on and MN deleted accordingly.

However, this does not negate the discussion started by the OP about how we post spoilers on MN. Nobody is advocating personal attacks.

You will, of course, notice the personal attacks on the OP of this thread. Pathetic? Get a fucking life? Grow the hell up? Ridiculous? Comments on spelling?

Is it okay to attack this op just because you agree with the sentiment of the attackers?

No, the personal attacks are wrong regardless and a complete straw man argument.

The question is, if a big enough percentage of users politely ask that you do something so easily in your power, do you want to do it or not? No. Fair enough, doesn't mean you're right, just that you don't want to acknowledge a polite request or don't think it necessary. You can't deny that a lot of people do think it necessary. It's part of being an online community. Personally, even though I don't care about spoilers, I can see it from the pov of other people who have watched a programme for years. No I wouldn't post spoilers in a thread title 12 hours after something has aired. Because I have that choice.

DraculasDixieNormas · 27/10/2015 10:57

I think grips need to be given, box set? so you are not even on to season 6 yet. Really if you are that far behind you stand need complaining about bloody spoilers.

The op said sorry
