How do you stop threads you are on becoming watched threads?

I've just spent ages deleting lots of watched threads and trying to keep the ones I wanted too. Am I doing something wrong?

In "Customise" you get to pick or not pick "watch threads I'm on".

Or when you post, untick the 'watch this thread' box underneath where you type your post in.
