Threads deleted to protect poster's privacy

This has probably been asked a hundred times. I often wonder about threads that are deleted to protect the privacy of the OP. Sometimes an inexperienced poster sticks their name or other super-identifiers in, but usually not. How does this get decided? Almost all posts in Chat or AIBU are somewhat identifying assuming they are true, is it possible posters pull this one if they don't like the way the thread goes?
