PLEASE READ: Forced logout and password reset

SarahMumsnet · 19/08/2015 22:12

Hello everyone,

Our apologies again for the stress and upset of the last week, and in particular the last 24 hours - and thanks for your patience and support in helping us deal with it.

Thanks to everyone who’s raised concerns about the strength of passwords on Mumsnet. We’ve now built new code which will oblige anyone logging in to create a new, complex password that conforms to higher security standards.

In the next hour, we’re going to force all users to be logged out. Then we'll change all users' passwords so they MUST reset their password to log back in. To make absolutely certain that everyone has a new, secure password, you’ll be logged out even if you’ve already changed your password in the last two days.

We’re sorry that this is the second mass password-reset in the space of a couple of days, but now we have code in place to strengthen security, we want to implement it as soon as possible.

Please don’t worry when you’re logged out: it’s MNHQ, not the hacker, behind it.

Thanks again
MNHQ

What's going on not 'one' ^^

msgrinch · 19/08/2015 23:40

Not moaning at all just wondering why I physically can't change my password as the page won't let me.

Topseyt · 19/08/2015 23:40

Thanks Sooty. I will explore the apps store for Windows phones tomorrow sometime. Can't face it right now.

Currently logged in with Google, as it didn't seem to like my FB login for some reason.

Passwords aren't for the faint hearted.

Costacoffeeplease · 19/08/2015 23:41

Yep, another one fed up here - piss up and brewery Sad

PaulAnkaTheDog · 19/08/2015 23:44

costa my thoughts exactly.

MrsEmmaPeel · 19/08/2015 23:46

I have just had to reset my password for the 3rd time today. I hope that I don't have to repeat this again when I come back on in a few days time.

Well that was more fun than dancing with a wet fish. Just. Grin

I 'think' I logged out myself but it seemed to coincide with great big colourful screens coming up so I may have been picked up by a wave at just that very second. After that, it worked .....OK. Not the way I'd do it but Hey - I've got a bad attack of passworditis and I can't even begin to imagine how Tech and other HQ staff are coping - with copious gin, I hope.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/08/2015 23:52

Do you really think forcing a site wide log off and password reset is something that's done with the flick of a switch? This will be a massive job for a team who have been on duty for hours and hours. Probably since yesterday and if you hadn't noticed it is nearly midnight so I bet they're tried and fed up and just want this fixed too.

Perhaps instead of being so bloody snarky and unpleasant about the free website you use for free to chat on the internet you should spare a thought for those who are no doubt working their socks off to fix this? Those people who haven't seen their partner or children and have had a really awful few days?

The site has been attacked and HQ are doing their level best to fix it. You are of course able to log off yourself and go to bed/use another site. You can also deregister yourself.

Biscetti · 19/08/2015 23:55

Hear hear Moving

Kosakova · 19/08/2015 23:56

I've managed to sign in with my FB account, but have just tried to change my password, gave up and decided to re-register. But it says my email account (and my old one) are not valid. Please explain, in simple terms how to change my password. I can't face not having MN to browse when I come to bed.

TitsCrossed · 19/08/2015 23:56

Um, I'm not sure what's happening with my password reset. I use phone/mobile site. Followed link in HQ email to reset pw which did not let me do it. Reading above is trying a 9 character pw so that might be the reason, but it said I had no username. Now switched to desk top sitesite (still using phone) and appear to still be logged in.

Bluewombler2k · 19/08/2015 23:57

Well said Movingonup

msgrinch · 19/08/2015 23:58

I agree completely moving however people are also unable to deregister atm and for users who haven't already got highly secure passwords and are worried, that must be concerning.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 19/08/2015 23:58

Moving I understand what you are saying. It is a free website but the staff running it are paid. I personally have little issue with having to reset passwords. It's fucking annoying though and it seemed like bordering on incompetent that some people have had to 3 times in a couple of days. There are also people who use the same username and password on several sites, they are allowed to be fucked off at this breach. I think a lot of the anger stems from MNHQ not actually knowing what the hell went on in the first place and then BAM thousands of people's details being leaked online a few days later.

People are allowed to be pissed and vent.

shewalkslikerihanna · 19/08/2015 23:59

I'm in on kindle but not iPad!

catzpyjamas · 20/08/2015 00:01

Tits log out on the desktop, then click reset password back at the login page.

shewalkslikerihanna · 20/08/2015 00:03

Well if nothing else it's got me to review my security on line.I've had so many password changes my heads spinning. Not just ment ones either and my name wAsn't on the list .

ilovesooty · 20/08/2015 00:03

I agree with Moving as well.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 20/08/2015 00:03

Thank you MNHQ

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 20/08/2015 00:04

They're running a website and yes they're paid but I doubt they are being paid over time. Something has clearly fallen over in the forced reset or it wasn't due to happen yet which means some poor bugger will be trying to fix it.

They are also not psychic so they can't tell you what they don't know.

Be fucked off at the inadequate who did the bad stuff. Not the victims.

MagalyMaman · 20/08/2015 00:04

Mumsnet said to check the url before entering password, which I did and it looked normal. There was a padlock there. But when I click on the padlock it says this site has been authenticated by go daddy security certificate authority or something like that. So even if it looks normal, it's only if you click on you can see if you've been pharmed or phished.

MagalyMaman · 20/08/2015 00:05

click on the padlock i mean

BlueNoon100 · 20/08/2015 00:05

I deregistered two accounts and have now registered with a newly made email account and it all worked perfectly. Just for balance. I know others are having difficulty.
Is it really pathetic to say that I find this quite upsetting? One fucking place where we can not feel bullied and patronised and its attacked, and the swatting thing is so sinister. It feels so vindictive and aggressive. Sad and also Flowers to all at mnhq

VeganCow · 20/08/2015 00:06

Paul, are you for real? Do you think normal intelligent thinking people are going to pay you for something they can manage themselves?
Why not go and flog that crap on a forum frequented by people who cannot think for themselves.
