Emails for watched threads question

When I get an email for a thread I'm watching, if I don't click on it, will I get another email when another post goes on the thread of not?

You should, Yes, I think. However, I've found that the system isn't entirely reliable on the matter of watched thread emails so if you're experiencing problems with it, you might be as well to use it only as an occasional gentle reminder and go in to check manually to see the status of a thread.

That's interesting, in fact I haven't had an email for this thread, even though there is a reply (yours)

It's the ones that are way way down the list, if like me, you have a lot of watched threads, it get's a bit tedious scrolling down to see if there are any replies

I actually had a thread about this a few months ago if I recall but I was having trouble at the time with my mail (they'd stopped pushing emails at the very least) so I gave the whole thing some time to recover and since then I've decided to pay little heed to it. Sometimes they come and sometimes they don't - so you're generally better off having a look at the thread. (The scrolling is a PITA but you learn to judge a little by the thread's positioning on the board (with the App.)

Maybe it will be sorted with the new App which is - as I understand it - at the final stages of development.

Hmmm.. I'm on a laptop so using the desktop site, so I guess that's not applicable to me.

Ah. Are you bookmarking to save the last position on a thread that you read/want to note? That will bang you straight to that point if you open a thread. (A serious PITA that the current App doesn't have it.)

Yes I always do that. Sometimes though, even when I get the emails and click on the link to go to the thread, it takes me to the top of the page and not where I have bookmarked, which can be a pain.

Interesting - and a frailty for MNHQ to maybe note? (I never go through to the thread in question from the email link - just note the additional post for future follow up. When I get the emails that is.)

PS - I decided to do it for once with the notification of your post which has just arrived - and it took me straight to the bookmarked position. Clearly behaving itself with all the scrutiny!

Just got the email notification for this thread, clicked on it and it went to the top, not to my bookmark!!!

It's not a problem on a short thread like this one but on long ones it is!

I suspect that the thing to do, Olivia, would be to discuss/upfront the rules for email notifications. (There must be some because if 100 people all decided to watch some fast-moving threads in, say, AIBU then the resulting mass of emails - if generated by every post - could either crash the system or could result in eg MN emails being blocked by some email providers as spam.)

I don't see why people should mind some rules about their generation but whatever they are, they're not apparent at the moment.

Clicking on the email link for this thread again takes me to the top of the page and not my bookmark.

It happens seemingly randomly on different threads.

Olivia are you able to answer the question which is: if I DON'T click on a link in the email to go to the thread (ie ignore it), will I get a subsequent email for that thread?

Interesting surmisal - try testing that?
