SophiePendragon · 18/07/2015 09:16

I'm looking for somewhere to post about bicycles and can't find the appropriate topic.

There is a weights topic. An Unexplained topic. Hmm

Is there a bikes one? BikeSmile

Lavendersun - they will be carrying stuff, I'll make sure of that! Grin

But mine is the only one capable of taking a proper carrier rack (which is partly why I was attracted to it when it came up) so both dh and ds will have to make do with seat post panniers. Haven't even checked yet whether ds' bike would even be able to take such a pannier - he's got it with room to grow, so the seat is really low at the moment.

But they're both more than capable of riding with rucksacks - but I suspect that on day trips, I'd get the stuff to transport. They can take the tool kits in their saddle bags though! Grin

They'll also have to accept I'm slow going up hills! Grin

Yoo hoo . . . waves at MNHQ

Do we deserve our own Topic yet? Please pretty please.

DollyMcDolly · 25/07/2015 16:15

Still no topic yet?

CoolWheelsPan · 25/07/2015 17:05

The incubation period is pretty long.Smile And nothing will happen over the weekend?

FelixFelix · 25/07/2015 20:37

Lavender I'm so impressed by your bag! I am a seamstress for a living but have never thought of trying something like that. I have a pattern for cycling caps to try though Grin

prettybird my DP started on a B'Twin Triban too. Tell him to upgrade the wheels and it will make a world of difference. Brilliant bike for the money but the wheels are like riding through toffee. DP's old ones are on my Bianchi at the moment!!

lavendersun · 25/07/2015 21:04

Thank you Felix Smile, you could do it with your eyes closed.

I sew anything tbh - have done lots of 'utility' sewing over the years - started by repairing my own horse rugs - then altering them when a particular design rubbed. I make canopies for our tents and rugs for my little pony etc., canoe bags and float covers - basically anything DH thinks up in the outdoor dept! I like sewing though - it is me time - I like to make myself something to wear most months, just me and radio 3 or 4 (am old) in my study.

Carradice bags are well thought out but their stitching is a bit Shock when you are a perfectionist with a decent machine.

I am going to make something like this next in Atwools chocolate canvas (will have to proof that though as only water resistant) Well, after DH's much modified bag Hmm.

I might make a pattern from my old karrimor panniers to make sure they are the right size. I quite like the challenge tbh.

Cycling topic anyone?
LadySharrowOfGolter · 26/07/2015 09:16

Loved the photos prettybird. Dh and I had many cycling holidays in France pre kids.

buffersandbumpers · 26/07/2015 20:52

Can anyone help explain why I'm getting sore toes? Shoes aren't that new, say 3 months. Didn't have a problem at first but this past few rides I'm getting properly sore toes to the extent I have to stop and rest them. Honestly it's tear inducing. Shoes def not too tight - if anything they're on the large side.

LammilyDoll · 26/07/2015 21:15

This might sound like a silly question, buffers . . . do your toenails need cutting?

I have to keep mine really short for riding (but admittedly this often involves quite a lot of hike-a-bike)

CoolWheelsPan · 26/07/2015 21:20

If they are slightly too large your feet maybe sliding down to the front and causing pressure. IF you want to keep them you could stuff them at the front with tissue paper or something? Not ideal but it may work. If it hurts it will put you off riding.

lavendersun · 26/07/2015 21:22

I asked DH buffers, he said that your cleats could be mounted in the wrong place, too far forward and you will use your toes like a claw.

Seat too high and/or frame too big will make you ride with your toes pointing downwards which can cause toe pain.

If you think everything else is right and you are sure the shoes are a good fit you might think about changing the insole.

In case anyone hadn't seen it - thread across here looking for support to convince MNHQ that we need a dedicated cycling topic Smile

prettybird · 26/07/2015 23:54

Oops - wrong thread Blush - this is the one I'm pointing to! Confused

dexter73 · 27/07/2015 07:28

RudyMentary - thanks for the tip off, I have ordered the bib tights!

lavendersun · 27/07/2015 10:49

Grin prettybird.

Have you been to Caen on your travels PB?

Looks like we get the max time in France by taking the Friday night ferry to Caen and then Sunday 14:00 time back. As DD will be with us cycling from Caen to Bayeux to see the tapestry will probably be enough on the Saturday then we can eat, drink and spend the day in town on the Sunday.

I was in Tesco getting my passport photo done at 8am - I even have a bit of make up on (fairly rare occurrence) so that I do not look like death for the next ten years. I did my renewal application online yesterday so just need to post it - if they do take three weeks as published I will be fine. After last year's bad press I bet they are better than they have ever been at turning things round - so, I am going to book the ferry!

prettybird · 27/07/2015 11:53

We went in/out of St Malo so have never been to Caen.

I'm thinking of going in to St Malo and going back via Caen if we do go for a few days in October.

CoolWheelsPan · 27/07/2015 18:29

It would be good if HQ remember that bike-related chat is still going on on the site, spread across various topics and threads - so fewer postings here isn't a reflection of lack of interest - it's just going on in the same disjointed way.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/07/2015 18:33

I don't cycle, but I do turn to MN for advice on bike related matters for DS so will happily add my support to a cycling topic!

CoolWheelsPan · 27/07/2015 19:05

Mabe Boris Johnson could launch the topic - and tell us all about the importance of obeying rules of the road, after being caught giving his wife a backie on his bike in the wee small hours in W London.
Not BJ's biggest fan, but when Bercow is revealed to have spent a gazillion pounds on a 0.8 mile car trip you've gotta larf.

Yoo hoo . . . waves at MNHQ

Do we deserve our own Topic yet? Please pretty please.

Good news! We've been given the green light for a Cycling topic. Yay! Grin

Our Tech team are just sorting everything out, but we'll be unveiling it shortly. We can then hoover up all the cycling-related threads dotted around the site and put them in the new topic.

p.s. Thanks to everyone for being wheelie patient. Wink

CoolWheelsPan · 28/07/2015 11:43

Nice. Bike
Maybe techs could check with users what categories should be used? Eg MTB/Road/Kids/Maintenance/Events/Comps/Trips etc??

SophiesDog · 28/07/2015 11:51

Oh thank you VERY much, Dawn and your team of tech people and anyone else involved in agreeing to this!

Brilliant news. SmileCakeStarBike

VelmaD · 28/07/2015 11:52

brilliant news, ill be there! i blame DP and his family, butni now not only understand bike terms but watched the TdF, own my own bike and enjoy cycling,,eeek.

LammilyDoll · 28/07/2015 13:22

Thank you MNHQ! And thank you for starting this thread, Sophie.

CoolWheelsPan - why do we need categories? Lots of people do more than one type of riding.
Surely we'll just have threads on different topics, for example:
What's the best kiddy seat?
How do I fix a puncture? etc
