Why do so many posts have £ instead of just £?

Why is there an  in front of the £ on so many posts? I use a laptop when browsing on MN and have a perfectly good £ on my keyboard, so where is the extra  coming from on other posts? What is the poster using to get a £ sign from?

It happens if you use the app, I don't think you can avoid it.

Thank you. I really CBA to post if I am on my phone. I find typing a reply such a faff on a phone as I prefer a full sized keyboard.
