For crying out loud MNHQ....why are you doing this again?

I raised your awareness to your insenstivity about a week ago & now I'm having to do the same - I'm sure you never used to be like this?

On your 'Infertility' section AGAIN, of all places Sad

It is NOT fair that this time when you add to a thread an ad is smacked in your face promoting FAMILY hotels. A hotel ad would have been acceptable but this is yet again taking it above and beyond.

I understand you are paid by these companies but at this rate if you're upsetting me I'm quietly confident you are hurting and insulting others who (as I mentioned to you previously) are struggling emotionally, physically and finacially in creating a family they long for,, you may possibly lose a fair few of us and these ads won't be seen.

I appreciate to you I may be appearing to be over-sensitive but I was lucky enough to achieve my dream. I'm merely thinking of those that so far haven't.

Hmm, I'm not sure you re bring entirely fair, tbh. After all, the women you are talking about are choosing to seek support and advice on a site called MUMSNET- I'm sure they can cope with the existence of the word 'family' in an advert.

If you were talking about ads with big pictures of gorgeous giggling babies, then I'd agree it was inappropriate and a bit crass, but I suspect you are going slightly overboard with this one, because you are a nice person, clearly, but perhaps a little over-zealous on this particular topic.

FuckItBucket · 19/03/2015 18:36

I keep getting ads about careers

Looseleaf · 19/03/2015 18:45

I spent 6 years ttc and can understand your sensitivity and also I acknowledge how hard it can be but I do agree with BitofFun.
(This is another topic but I tend to determinedly ignore all adverts anyway and strongly object to how consumerist our world is when I don't need or want another thing (other than food right now which don't adverts for either!)

Georgethesecond · 19/03/2015 18:47

Some of the ads are because of your browsing history though, I don't think everyone gets the same ones. Have you been looking at holidays in hotels?

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 19/03/2015 22:34

Some of the ads are because of your browsing history though

I thought that was the case with pretty much all ads online.

CliveCussler · 19/03/2015 22:37

I don't think the ads are connected to particular threads.

BiscuitMillionaire · 19/03/2015 22:37

yeah, MN don't choose which ads appear where, it's all because of the cookies on your computer.

Yosemitefalls · 19/03/2015 22:38

Mmmm... well mine at the top is for the lottery which I've not been browsing.... generally though they do bring up shops I've looked at on-line.

I do understand your point OP having suffered infertility myself but I don't really think it's reasonable to expect adverts to be tailored as such.

Allisgood1 · 19/03/2015 22:41

Get the app. There's no ads. And YABU.

Thesuperswimmingdolphin · 19/03/2015 22:46

Do people currently suffering infertility HONESTLY expect there to be no mention of family or children on a parenting site? Hmm I sincerely hope you're only speaking for yourself OP?

HippoPottyMouth · 19/03/2015 22:47

You are quite definitely being over-sensitive.

26Point2Miles · 19/03/2015 22:59

Yabu

That sounds right to me.

It must be based on personal browsing history cos half of mine aren't even in English. So doubt MN hand picked them for the site at large.

Mrsmorton · 21/03/2015 13:24

I haven't got children. I still have a family though. YABU.

ssd · 21/03/2015 13:26

well over the top there op

TheWhiteRoad · 21/03/2015 13:28

As others have pointed out, most ads are based on your browsing history. The advert at the top of my page is for an iPad case I looked at on Amazon yesterday.

I can see why gurgling babies might be upsetting for some but I really can't see someone choosing to seek support on MUMsnet being triggered by an advert for a family holiday.

LeBearPolar · 21/03/2015 13:29

I agree with other posters - firstly each of us sees different ads depending on our browsing history and secondly, you can't honestly expect to see no references to family on a parenting website.

Your post does seem a little strange, to be honest.

UnikittyInHerBusinessSuit · 21/03/2015 13:35

And not all people on the Infertility section will be child-free; they may have secondary infertility, or step-children.

In addition, this seems a strange thing to complain about because if I browse the Infertility talk page, the right hand side shows discussion of nappy reviews, due date calculators, family meal planners, baby name finders, baby and toddler groups, "Tell Kinder about the funny stories your DCs have told you". One advert is just a drop in the ocean if what you're actually asking for is for the Infertility section to be a walled garden with nothing on view from the rest of MN (and I can understand why you might want that - having been through it I know there are times when you want to go to a place where you can guarantee that there will be no pregnant women or babies on view - I just don't think that MN will ever be able to provide that for you).

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 21/03/2015 13:42

My advert is for a Flash Magic Eraser. I must lead an exciting internet life Grin

Agree with others though in saying that you are being a bit too over-sensitive here which in turn is a bit unfair to Mumsnet (a website primarily aimed at families)

noblegiraffe · 21/03/2015 13:47

OP, it is not normal to be so disproportionately upset over a word in an advert. It sounds like you are probably having a tough time at the moment and need to take care of yourself.

If you need MN, then investigate ad-free options, like getting an adblocker.

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 21/03/2015 14:00

Flowers and a Smile for you OP. It must be so hard xxxx

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 21/03/2015 14:01

That was meant to be a Cake. But have a smile too x

BackCrackAndNappySack · 21/03/2015 14:06

I find that most of the ads that pop up for me are targeted specifically at me based on websites I've visited and things I've looked at. Even so, for the general stuff, does the MN website even have the ability to block certain ads from appearing in certain topics? That sounds extremely expensive and labour intensive, given that they would have to second guess every possible permutaion of posters and topics where a particular advert might be considered insensitive or inappropriate. Confused

I am sorry these things are so hard for you to deal with and I do understand why, but I am not sure it's really possible to censor the internet for you. SadFlowers
