Every time I have been on Mn this morning it keeps crashing safari. It doesn't do it on any other website. I'm using an iPad. Any ideas what's going on or how I can fix it?
BeccaMumsnet · 17/03/2015 12:58
Hi everyone - we're sorry about this. We have flagged to Tech.
We hope you won't have to be deprived of Gobbolinothewitchscat's wit much longer
Thanks so much for your patience.
KateSMumsnet · 17/03/2015 15:47
Sorry everyone, please bear with us!
BeccaMumsnet · 18/03/2015 15:09
Hi everyone - we have flagged these issues to Tech and they are looking into it now.
BeccaMumsnet · 18/03/2015 17:07
Hi again everyone - Tech have sorted a fix so should be back to normal soon. Thanks so much for your patience
ColetteTech · 18/03/2015 22:45
Hi all,
Damnit, we thought we'd got to the bottom of this one. If you're still around, could you let me know if this is still happening in 30 mins time? I've just put in a temporary measure to help stop this and it would be good to hear if it's worked. Thanks very much
ColetteTech · 18/03/2015 22:46
@PookBob
Also, why do I always get these crappy flashing adverts? They are really annoying. And obviously a con.
We're on the hunt for these too, thanks for the screengrab.
ColetteTech · 18/03/2015 23:19
Thanks for the updates all, we'll keep looking.
BeccaMumsnet · 19/03/2015 10:27
Hi everyone - Tech has done a fix for the slow-ness issue.
If MN is crashing your browser, they have recommended you update your browsers to the most recent version.
If anyone finds they're still having trouble, please do get back to us.
Thanks for your patience everyone
BeccaMumsnet · 19/03/2015 13:49
Hi again everyone - Tech have suggested searching for iPad and Safari crashing issues online, because there doesn't seem to be an issue at our end.
However, if this does seem to be a MN only issue, please do come back to us.
BeccaMumsnet · 20/03/2015 12:20
Hi everyone - sorry it's taken a little while to get back to you all, and so sorry this is still happening.
We've taken on board what you've all been saying and are looking into it. Tech have been trying to replicate the issue at our end but haven't been able to so far.
It looks as though this could be an odd glitch, so please do bear with us.
Thanks for posting and we are sorry this issue is still ongoing
DawnMumsnet · 20/03/2015 21:48
Evening everyone,
We're really, really sorry that this is still happening for some of you.
Our Tech folk are still on the case and we promise to update as soon as we can.
IonaMumsnet · 21/03/2015 21:13
Glad to hear updating has sorted things out for some of you. Huge apologies to everyone still having problems. Tech are still looking into this. We'll update the thread when there is any news.
IonaMumsnet · 22/03/2015 15:46
Afternoon all. Not great news we're afraid, but just to keep you all updated, Tech are pretty sure this is a bug in Safari iOS rather than a bug with Mumsnet. They are continuing to investigate to see if there's anything that can be done, but it is something that's happening on other websites, too. We will update again if there is any further news. Apologies again for any inconvenience - we know it's really annoying.
IonaMumsnet · 22/03/2015 16:30
Update on the update... Tech have just put in a small workaround for the Safari bug. Could anyone tell us if that seems to have made any difference? Many thanks!
IonaMumsnet · 22/03/2015 16:59
Oh. Sorry if we got your hopes up. Tech will keep trying. More news as it breaks.
ShamTech · 24/03/2015 10:48
Hi all. Thank you for all your feedback. It's clear from the plethora of complaints on the internet that this is a bug in Safari/webkit on iOS and not exclusively affecting MN. However, we are working on systematically isolating the element on MN pages that is triggering this bug. As soon as we have found it, I will post again here and let you know the plan. Thanks for your patience.
ShamTech · 26/03/2015 09:35
Hi again. We've been trying very hard to narrow down the criteria that triggers this bug in Safari, but alas it is still eluding us. We've had our resident iOS developer do some deeper analysis the exact moment Safari crashes and have used this information to submit a bug report to Apple. The bug ID is 20291294 for anybody who is interested and has access to the Apple developer site. It's definitely not isolated to Mumsnet, although of course that is no comfort to us. I will post again when we have more news.
DawnMumsnet · 28/03/2015 16:05
Hi there,
Just so you all know, we're still listening, and still doing all we can to get to the bottom of this issue. Not much consolation, we know.
We'll post an update from our Tech team as soon as we can.
BunnyEarsBeccaMumsnet · 08/04/2015 12:39
Hi everyone - we really can't apologise enough that this issue is still happening. Tech are working on it and we will update you all as soon as we know what's happening.
We know it must be very frustrating. Thank you so much everyone for being so so patient
KateSMumsnet · 16/04/2015 12:34
Hullo everyone,
We're so sorry this is being such a pita. We have had our tech team looking into this, and they say it isn't an issue our end of things. It seems to be a bug in Safari, so they've raised it with Apple and are looking for a way to avoid the bug from triggering.
They're still very much looking for a solution to the problem, but at the moment they haven't been able to isolate the issue, which means they can't put in a fix. As far as we can tell at moment, the crashes seem to be completely random.
The only other thing we can suggest is updating your iOS, which seems to help some people.
We're really sorry - we do realise how annoying this must be, we are trying everything we can to get it fixed. Do keep talking to us, and we'll update you if we have any more news for you
ShamTech · 17/04/2015 15:53
Thank you for all your feedback. I realise some of you are having problems on non-iOS devices (your PCs/Macs etc), but I believe those are not exhibiting the same crashes as iOS. What I mean by a crash is when you tap/click something and your browser instantly vanishes. Poof. As far as I know this serious crash is only happening on iOS (be it Safari or Chrome or whatever).
So could I please ask those of you with iOS, does it still crash even though you are on the latest version 8.3 of iOS? This is particularly important for us to find out as we have had feedback from Apple to this regard and we are also not able to cause any crashes on our own devices when on iOS 8.3. Your continued feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
ShamTech · 17/04/2015 17:06
Birnamwood could you please elaborate on the 'cannot parse response'? Where are you seeing this if Safari crashes and disappears? Alternatively a screenshot would be very helpful. Thank you.
ShamTech · 20/04/2015 16:06
Thank you all again for keeping the feedback coming. It really helps us. We are experimenting with a change right now and will review the outcome tomorrow. Could you please post again today/tonight if your iPad browser is still crashing from now onwards? Thank you.
ShamTech · 20/04/2015 16:33
Thank you AgathaChristie01 and Poofus. Is this all since 16:06 when I posted or are you referring to before that? ie have you experienced a crash since 16:06?
ShamTech · 20/04/2015 17:09
Thank you both. I know this is asking a lot, but if there is any chance of taking a screenshot of the page (top of the page, rather than halfway down) before you tap a link that makes it crash, I'd be grateful. If not, could you tell me what page you were on when it crashed? Thanks.
